GNOME 2.6 delay likely after security breach

A security breach is likely to delay for several days tonight's (AEST) scheduled release of the next version of the popular GNOME open source desktop environment, a member of the release team said.

Jeff Waugh, the head beekeeper of the GNOME Release Team and the director of the GNOME Foundation Board has confirmed that a security breach of the GNOME Web server is "likely to delay the release [of GNOME 2.6]...however we have not made that decision officially yet". He told ZDNet Australia   the delay was likely to be about a week.

Last night Owen Taylor, on behalf of the GNOME sysadmin team released a statement via their newsgroup that an intrusion had been made.

This morning Waugh claimed that the intrusion was "not that serious" and that it seemed unlikely that the central code repository was touched by the intrusion. It is understood that the GNOME forensic team are currently investigating the compromise further, with an official announcement due afterwards.

According to Waugh, the GNOME Web servers that are hosted by Red Hat were compromised by -a dumb cracker who probably didn't realise what they got into".

GNOME is a popular desktop suite and development platform for UNIX and LINUX systems included in major Linux distributions of Suse, Sun's Java Desktop System and Red Hat. It is also used on the Solaris UNIX environment.

According to Waugh, the GNOME Web servers that are hosted by Red Hat were compromised by “a dumb cracker who probably didn’t realise what they got into”. - What does this say about RedHat's ability to administer their own product? Given that Gnome is a popular choice for other Linux compilations how does this reflect on the security of those compilations? This reminds me of the situation Debian found itself in some months back where their servers had been compromised and were distributing trojan code to end users and mirror sites.

Waugh is a hated person in the GNOME community. Hated because he always slanders and namecall people that don't fit in his vision.

In the past years he caused a lot of damage to various people such as the art.gnome.org people which he totally pissed off (result in people leaving GNOME) he also goes to public speeches and slanders about people in the public which shoes his real face and wherever he shows up he is most likely to be hated.

There aren't many people inside the GNOME community who really likes him, besides some newcommer people who has shown up in the past couple or months. But a lot of old sitten GNOME developers and community members learned to hate him.

You there are able to read and listen with your own ears how he publicly slanders GNOME developers in the public, what other people who got slandered by him think etc.

Listen Mr. "I want to stay anonymous": we know it's you Ali.

The only person who is widely hated by the GNOME community is you. Jeff Waugh, on the other hand, is a respected member of that community, and what he said about you is right on the money: you're a MegaTroll! Nothing more, nothing less. Go away!

"Jeff Waugh, on the other hand, is a respected member of that community"

If he is such a respected member of that community then how comes so many people dislikes him (besides the minions he usually hang around with who wipe the dirt whenever he says 'jump') ? Have you spent a minute reading the contents of the tarball where a lot of other 'members of that community' say exactly the opposite ?

What have people like Aldug, Star, Dr. Frickle or Ali Akcaagac done to him, that gives him the right to show up on all places and slander them ?

To be a 'respected' person of a community it requires more than just abusing the lend privileges to work in GNOME. To be a 'respected' person you need to be an example of good person in the public. To motivate people, to not badmouth about others, to listen to other people, to accept other peoples opinion (regardless whether they are right or not). When you represent GNOME in the public then you need to be even more diplomatic and show a good example. Jeff Waugh may be a 'respected' person in the community (sure there are people who believe this) but you shouldn't forget that you need to earn this respect. All the 'powers' given to him are lend during normal elections. They should be used to help the project to become better, to become an example of good coordination and teamwork. They shouldn't be abused to put those who seriously worked long on certain GNOME parts (be it 'me' (hi aes), aldug, star or dr.frickle or even others) into the corner.

If you want to increase the community and have more people work on GNOME then you should be open to criticism. If that person can not deal with criticism (as every bigger project needs to take them) then there is something wrong with that person and he is probably not suited for that work. That person still has no right to go outside (even to a public audience) and call people who do work for GNOME to be Trolls. So what do you think people do ? Take everything Mr. 'Respected' says and ignore it ?

A good example of community is when people work together, when they respect each other and when they are open to criticism and talk about them in a normal way. Calling people 'Trolls' (which is a common behaviour in GNOME) shows only ignorance, mighdemonstrations, abuse of lend powers (lend by those who elect in every new election). Those who ignore all this and make a funny laugh about all this aren't better than him.

So much about the 'respected' person thing. I know there aren't much who understands these principles but as long as Jeff acts like an **** in the public as long you can expect people to give big huge **** to him as well. Maybe there are 10 people who make funny jokes in the #gnome-hackers channel (who cares, they don't understand anything either) but it may be interesting to know that there are thousands of people outside who may see it differently.

GNOME is not a "Jeff's World" it's an open community with people who contribute to it in their best ways. With people who have different opintions, with people who have a different way to help GNOME. If some so called selfish declared 'gods' believe they can slander other people just the way they like without fearing to get shitten back from those then they are wrong.

There are other people who like to contribute to GNOME as well with their best skills. More of such kind of ignorance and misbehaviour can only lead of frustration, slandering people leads to more frustration. Now that certain people was called 'Troll' often enough then you shouldn't wonder that they start acting as such and as a result the entire project is affected by it.

    > But you *are* a troll. Get over it.

See, you only confirm my initial theory that your likes are really stupid people. You go out slander people for no reason, you should shame yourself for being so rude and ignorant.

There is a real urgent need to make people outside of GNOME aware of the true problems inside GNOME. At the end it's not the project who stinks. It's certain people who abuse their powers who totally stink. If the internal stinks then future development and the future of GNOME stinks as well.

You need to learn that you can choose the people you work with. But you should learn (as I had learned it) to get along with others somehow. Even if it's problematic. But some people seem to not have understood the lesson.

Calling people 'Trolls' doesn't help GNOME as project itself. It only shows ignorance by selfish people. Who want's to contribute to a project with such people ? You can call me 'Troll' as much you want. This doesn't change my views about GNOME and the opinion I have about some people. They only strengthen my believes and theories. It's simply true.

Yes, I've read the contents of the jdub-tarball, and I don't see any problems with Jeff's behaviour. He's being very reasonable in spite of being attacked by oGALAXYo. The fact is that you (Ali Akcaagac) are a megatroll because of your own actions, and not because of some conspiracy by members of the GNOME community. This is a small sample of your work. There is no possible way you can claim that this isn't trollish flamebait:

Nice, as if the problem within GNOME arrived from one day to another. The problems of bad behaviour and abuse of powers is there for quite some years now. People who missed the point where GNOME became more than just a little 'hackers toy'. GNOME as well as KDE are important parts of the Open Source AND Free Software movement these days. There is also a big difference if you go outside and talk about the problems of GNOME and the community in a normal way (without specifying people or namecall them) or if you go on public speeches and call people by name and troll about them without giving those who are affected by this a chance to justify what they said. In an open forum (such as this one) I give you (the reader and the person who replies) the chance to reply to me as person and you can expect to get a normal and correct answer from me. This is quite a big difference.

But as I initially said, the problem in GNOME exist for a couple of years. When other people go outside and suggest other people to chose something else then it does have a reason. Because he made the overall experience that the community he works for all the years isn't really nice. Or because he believes that another project may be more suitable for the user he replies to. At the end it's just a normal conversation on a forum where everyone has the right to bring up his opinion in a normal way. There is no need for selfish people to play the judge there. If you think the person is wrong then you have the rights to either ignore it or reply to them in a correct way. And replying in a correct way doesn't mean "You are a Troll". It means talking in a mature way so the people who reads or listens to it won't get the feeling that idiots are talking or replying there. How many times you, a Jeff Waugh, I or another person talks **** on this globe. Hell nobody has the time to count all the **** People make mistakes, they even offend other people but there should always be normal conditions where you can say 'ok happened, sorry and forget it'. Jeff Waugh as far as I know never apologized to the people he slandered. For him it's just natural to do so because he know nobody will ever moot him.

Do you get my message ? And no, he is not such a respective person. And you just confirmed another theory of mine. A global thing that I noticed in all the years to. You just named a specific person I saw in the past years that people like you have been namecalling people this way without even confirming or knowing whether it's really them you simply name them without knowing how much damage you cause to them. Have you ever thought for one single moment that those that you call by name now or Troll about were responsible for what you accuse them ? You go outside, you read some mail and you play 50:50 and assume it's someone and voila write your **** towards it ? A bunch of peoples reputation and creditibility got killed that way.

You are quite smart and probably read that 'the ultimate troll' story (a classic of it's own) where a girl was visiting an university or college or something and some morons have killed her reputation because they have "created" some flame stuff and the girl who wasn't able to defend herself then got thrown out of that school. Well something like that. You people should shame yourself for such a similar behaviour. You will earn what you seed. You created an Troll, you will see these people trolling.

Have you read Göthes Zauberlehrling (sorcerer's apprentice) - Die Geister die ich rief (The ghosts that I called). If not then go and read it.
