BigPond gets anti-spam, anti-virus software

Telstra has announced it will be rolling out spam filtering and anti-virus software on its BigPond network.

The new anti-spam and anti-virus service is an optional extra for BigPond customers -- the telco billing them a "fee of just $2.50 per mailbox per month for each of the spam filtering and anti-virus filters".

In a statement released yesterday, BigPond's managing director, Justin Milne, said the new service has been introduced in response to the growing volume of spam and mass mailing worms, such as SoBig.F. "As the Internet evolves, worms and viruses can be highly disruptive to individual users and can cost businesses millions of dollars. Similarly, spam is on the rise with the cost of the scourge borne by Telstra and its customers," he said.

The service is designed to be "set and forget".

In addition to the anti-spam and anti-virus software, Telstra say they will be rolling out a optional personal firewall service to BigPond customers later this month.

Industry sources have indicated it will be based on Network Associates' recently launched subscription based software suite.

I have signed up for your spam ...M David Cheek -- 13/10/03

I have signed up for your spam eradication system at the monthly rate, however, the volume of spam has increased not decreased or stopped.....my question is "Is this as good as it gets?""
If so it would appear to me too be useless....if I could drop my old e-mail address of davidcheek.bigpond.com it would virtually cease to exist as all the spam is coming in under that address not my ADSL address....can this be done??

    Your reply is awaited.....David Cheek

Unfortunately I cannot recomme ...Greg Chesher -- 12/11/03

Unfortunately I cannot recommend the Telstra Anti spam software when used alone. In just three days it has collected only three items that are genuine spam but collected also about eleven items that are genuine email. These included senders such as American Express; The New Republic; NY Times.com This is not good enough as it requires a check on the web site every day to sort out the wanted messages and then to inform Bigpond not to make the same mistake again. I have cancelled my trial. I thought that Telstra would have done better than this!
