KeyCorp said in a statement today the initial rollout of the card was expected to be extended to Hong Kong's 6.8 million residents. The deal is expected to generate AU$5 million for the company every year.
PCCW Business eSolutions, a unit of telecommunications heavyweight PCCW, is to use KeyCorp's MULTOS operating system to ensure the privacy of residents' personal data, KeyCorp said. "Data privacy and security were two core priorities for this project," the company claimed.
The smart-card identity system is expected to replace a laminated plastic photo identification card system in use since 1987.
