Police and banks launch Internet fraud awareness campaign By AAP March 08, 2005 URL: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/security/soa/Police-and-banks-launch-Internet-fraud-awareness-campaign/0,130061744,139183807,00.htm
Increasing Internet fraud has prompted federal police and banks to launch a national education program, warning online bankers to protect their personal information. The Australian Bankers' Association (ABA), its member banks and the Australian High Tech Crime Centre (AHTCC), hosted by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), embark on a three-week newspaper advertising campaign aimed at outlining practical ways internet users can reduce the risk of online fraud. Launching the campaign in Sydney today, ABA chief executive David Bell and AFP commissioner Mick Keelty were among speakers advising Internet users to install and keep up-to-date anti-virus software and firewalls. They also advised users to avoid giving out their PIN or password, to delete spam e-mail, and not to access Internet banking from an e-mail link. "Initiatives like this campaign are reflective of the ongoing efforts to combat a variety of online crimes both in Australia and across the globe," AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty said. While online fraudulent transactions were low compared to more traditional types of fraud, it was an emerging issue that communities needed to work to address, he said. "Figures show that round 40 percent of the Australian population bank online and there are simple steps they can take to protect themselves from becoming victims of Internet-based fraud," he said.
