The Australian Academic Research Network was partially down for eight hours over the weekend leaving three South Australian Universities inaccessible from the Internet.

The South Australian node of the Australian Academic Research Network (AARNet), which is used for Internet access by the University of South Australia, Adelaide University and Flinders University, suffered an eight-hour outage from about midday yesterday, due to the loss of its power supply.

AARNet spokesperson Glen Turner said he couldn't confirm how many students would have been affected by the weekend's partial wipeout. -The point I'd like to make is that it affected a single state, across a weekend," Turner said. -Universities are traditionally closed across the weekend," he added.

According to Turner, lost power supply on AARNet is something that happens -quite often".

-Given that our user base is more interested in value for money we take a step back from reliability," he said. -We don't offer the same reliability as a telephone service, but we don't offer the same outrageous pricing."
