The last of the so-called free Internet Service Providers in Australia - FreeOnline -- has called it quits, announcing today that its service will no longer be in operation from September 1 onwards.

A message posted on FreeOnline's Web site today said it will be discontinuing its ISP service.

-We apologise for any inconvenience that the closure of the service may cause, and we thank you for your support.

The ISP will be switching the service off to customers at midnight on August 31.

www.consult analyst Richard Gillis told ZDNet there's no surprises here.

"It wasn't unexpected, they've gone like all the other free ISPs in Australia," Gillis said.
