The Australian Bureau of Statistics has included new questions to the national census, to measure the take-up of technology across the country. The census will provide data on computer and Internet usage across the country, giving a picture of the widespread use of technology in Australian cities and regional communities. An ABS spokesperson says the additional questions ascertain whether the -so-called technological divide between regional and urban Australia really does exist". The government and industry will use the data for improving service delivery and access to IT across the country. According to the spokesperson, the questions on the census rarely change, which reflects the explosion of technology developments since the last census took place five years ago. The census will take place on August 7, 2001.
