Online education will reach a new level when the University of New South Wales unveils its virtual lecture room -- linking students on a global scale.

The virtual lecture facility, to be launched June 19, will link the University of New South Wales, the Imperial College in London and Mahanakorn University of Technology in Bangkok.

-The laboratory, which spans time zones and distance, draws together three of the world's top ranking engineering universities in a high-level exchange of knowledge and resources in a real-time, technology-intensive environment," Professor Branko Celler, head of the UNSW school of electrical and telecommunications engineering said.

UNSW's virtual lecture room will be decked out with high-tech equipment and video facilities to broadcast audio and video images and the content of an electronic whiteboard across numerous sites worldwide.

Interaction between lecturer and students will be facilitated by a combination of high-speed data connection, satellite and video streaming, Professor Celler said.

-Technology has an ever-growing influence over the delivery of education and, with the launch of the virtual lab, UNSW, the Imperial College and Mahanakorn University are leading the way," Professor Celler said.

Use of the virtual lecture laboratory will be kicked off as participants from London, Sydney and Bangkok take part in an interactive Q & A session following the lecture room's launch.
