Job Index: shortage to hit One.Tel workers By Megan McAuliffe, ZDNet Australia June 05, 2001 URL: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/soa/Job-Index-shortage-to-hit-One-Tel-workers/0,139023165,120227184,00.htm
Given the current weakness in the IT&T sector, indicated by the amount of jobs advertised on the Internet, former employees of One.Tel may face tough times when searching for positions within the telecommunications industry. -Many of the [former employees of One.Tel] will find it difficult to get another role in telecommunications, particular the semi-skilled roles such as call centre operators," Olivier Recruitment Group director Robert Olivier said. Olivier's Internet Job Index indicates a further decline of 16.7 percent in the Information Technology & Telecommunications sector. "That's 4,760 jobs less than the month before," Olivier said. The Index found an increase of 4.28 percent in Australian jobs advertised in May for all other sectors except IT&T. According to Olivier, the tech sector's continued decline has meant an overall drop of 2.75 percent in jobs advertised. "There hasn't been a worse time in the past 18 months than now for IT&T people to be looking for work," "You'd have to advise former One.Tel staffers to consider what other industries they might move to," he said. The recruitment group says the overall effect of One.Tel's collapse on jobs in the sector is not known as yet. -There will be a definite knock-on effect in confidence," Olivier said.
