Westpac is in serious damage control after its Internet banking service collapsed today, leaving 750,000 customers stranded.

Westpac's Net banking service suffered the outage at 10 o'clock this morning, causing the bank to shut down its service to customers.

A message posted on the site says, "sorry, Internet Banking is currently not available. Please try again shortly, or in the interim you could use Telephone Banking...."

The telephone banking service, however, has also been hit by a software problem.

A Westpac spokesperson blamed a software glitch associated with the system used by both Internet and telephone banking.

The bank claims security on the site has not been compromised by the outage.

"There is no way that security would ever be compromised...it has been shut down," a spokesperson said.

"The consistency of service is not as it is supposed to be across the board,

"We're working hard to rectify it."
