Couriers whizzing about Australian cities on two wheels will soon have real-time communications with their operations centre through a newly developed portable wireless device. City bound Bonds Couriers will get to ride the technology wave with jobs dispatched directly to a Compact Mobile Data Terminal (CMDT) display consisting of a keypad which allows couriers to acknowledge a pick-up address, the delivery status and enter their record-keeping requirements. "The CMDT is the first unit of its kind in Australia and a unique communications device for wireless data transfer in dispatch applications," Bonds Couriers MD, Anthony Moss, said. Bonds said it has used data terminals in its courier vehicles for many years but has had a "growing gap in our communications network for our two-wheeled vehicles," according to Moss. And couriers won't miss out on personal contact with call centre staff with the CMDTs operating through a portable two-way radio unit. "The opportunity to use a Data Terminal with a portable radio was an extremely important step for us," Moss said. Sydney-based Expertech developed the CMDTs for the fleet of Bonds Couriers. "The unit has been well received by our Couriers," Moss said.
