The federal Bureau of Meteorology has signed a support deal with Hewlett-Packard for the agency's mid-range server hardware and software from the same vendor.
The deal is worth approximately AU$405,000 and lasts from this month until July 2007.
"It's just standard maintenance and support for our HP servers, which are our mid-range servers," the bureau's Jo Pitt told ZDNet Australia this afternoon, noting those servers carried out operational work and utilised Unix and Linux operating systems.
Pitt has responsibility for regional IT equipment and mid-range head office IT equipment in Melbourne, excluding PC desktops and the bureau's supercomputer facility.
The manager said her agency had around eight HP mid-range servers, most of which were currently between three and six years old.
The Bureau of Meteorology employs around 1,420 people in some 60 offices around Australia, offshore islands and Antarctica according to its 2004/05 annual report. The group provides surveillance, forecasts and warning services relating to meteorological conditions.
