Western Australia's largest energy retailer Synergy stated in yesterday's Western Australian State Budget that it plans to establish its own IT environment.
The Budget papers reveal that Synergy has allocated $19.2 million over this year's Budget and forward estimate for the creation of a stand-alone IT environment including hardware and software.
"The new environment will be established on the principles of standardisation and established industry standards, which will allow effective and efficient operations into the future," the Budget papers said.
Previous to this, IT infrastructure was provided by Western Power, the government-owned corporation responsible for the transmission and distribution network in the South West of Western Australia following the 2006 Western Power restructure.
Horizon Power, the government corporation responsible for regional electricity, also flagged IT spend in the Budget. The corporation said that it would be spending $12.6 million establishing and enhancing IT systems and underlying business process across all aspects of its operations.
