Nortel rules out Australian job cuts
Networking equipment supplier Nortel's Australian operations are expected to escape the global job cuts flagged overnight, according to Australia and New Zealand president Mark Stevens.In a statement e-mailed to ZDNet Australia, Stevens said "at this time we do not expect the recent announcement regarding the changes within Nortel's global operations to impact Australia.

In a statement e-mailed to ZDNet Australia, Stevens said "at this time we do not expect the recent announcement regarding the changes within Nortel's global operations to impact Australia.
"In Australia, we continue to hire new personnel to meet growth in our business and to support our plans for further expansion".
Canadian-based Nortel said it planned to cut 1,900 jobs worldwide while creating 800 new positions in technology centres in Mexico and Turkey under a restructuring expected to yield savings of US$275 million across the 2007 and 2008 calendar years. The cuts are expected to be deepest in the technology operations area, but management and marketing are also set to feel the knife.
