in brief Western Australia's International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) has announced a partnership with IBM to manage the data produced by the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope.
"In its first hour alone, the SKA will generate more information than that currently held in the entire World Wide Web," said WA Treasurer and Commerce Minister Troy Buswell in a statement.
The final location for the SKA telescope is undecided, with a decision coming in mid-2012 to choose between Australia/New Zealand or South Africa. ICRAR director and WA premier's research fellow, Professor Peter Quinn, said that the partnership would help the A/NZ bid to host the SKA.
"IBM is delighted to be contributing to what will be one of the largest science instruments on the planet," IBM managing director Australia and New Zealand Glen Boreham said.
