Full text: EDS' Caspari emails Aussie troops

EDS employees in Australia and New Zealand have received an email from local chieftain David Caspari which explains what the planned global pay cuts will mean for them.

Following the HP results, company CEO Mark Hurd sent out an email to all employees globally, saying that some sectors of the company weren't performing well and that HP was expected by analysts and investors to cut headcount to set off declining revenues.

However, Hurd didn't like that option and decided that the company would reduce employees' pay at varying levels depending on position, although he didn't rule out future redundancies saying there were "no guarantees".

Now an Australia/New Zealand-specific email to EDS staff has been sent from Caspari, saying a local country implementation team had been formed, headed up by HP HR director (South Pacific) Jim Lefever, which would introduce the pay cut program depending on legal requirements and employee consent.

The complete email reads as follows:

By now, you will have all seen the announcement from Mark Hurd regarding our Q1 results including the statements regarding compensation. Naturally, many of you have questions and concerns about these statements and what they mean for our region and you, as individuals.

The RLT has been briefed and I have asked them to brief their Management Teams to ensure effective cascading of information currently available. General Fads are available on Infocentre. Some information is applicable only in the US.

An Australian and New Zealand Country Implementation Team, led by Jim Lefever, has been formed and tasked with working through the details, implications and legislative requirements. The program will be rolled out based on legal requirements and subject to employee consent. As soon as we have region specific information, we will share this with you.

Please be assured that as we gain more information and develop a local implementation plan, we will continue to communicate with you.

    Oh yes, people are our biggest asset. Bollocks. I'll never EVER work for an outsourcer ever again. Did it twice, will not happen again. When things have improved - people will walk. And good on them. To hell with these idiots.

    Now honestly, people... he gets $42,514,524 of which "only" $1,450,000 is his base salary. He offers to cut 20%. Well, that still leaves him with $41.354.524 plus his stock options.

    And now he wants 100,000 people to accept pay cuts... What a strange world we live in.

    It is the same in many other companies. Widespread cuts to all kinds of expenses .... but we are told that it is important to incentivise the top execs to ensure they do their best.

    Isn't their a law against this kind of stupidity?

    Honestly, you would think the government would have rules in place that could stop a company's ability to cut pay for average level employees, when their execs are still going to get a bonus.

    No matter what the figures are, this just does not make any sense.

    Surely the shareholders have some say or vote in this.. no? Does the IR commission know about this?

    Gosh some people are naive, politicians are paid by corporate australia, why do you think Macklin or Maslin or whatever her name is claims that the government has no business sticking their nose in fat cat salaries. The shareholders only think about money, that is why the world is in the mess it is in today. IR laws - little jonnie did a great job there. No protection at all.

    By the way how old is Caspari, he looks like a teenager on that photo. He talks about cascading, that is one of the problems - too many layers of expensive management doing nada. Whatever happened to actually talking to your people, even the lingo creates distance.

    If you want to "effectively cascade implementation plan information as briefed to the RLT" it might help...

    My eyes are bleeding after that assault on the Queen's English.
