The Department of Defence has revealed the vendors selected to supply whole-of-government computer equipment to federal government agencies on a short-term basis.

The government had decided to form a whole-of-government panel for computer equipment because of a recommendation in the Gershon Review on IT, released in 2008. The review said that government should use its buying power to negotiate better deals.

However, that panel has taken time to form, with the Department of Finance only issuing a tender for it last week. The Department of Defence had pressing needs for new equipment, and had decided to form an interim panel as lead agency for all of the Federal Government organisations.

Vendors which have made it onto that panel to provide computer equipment for interim government hardware needs until the permanent panel is put into place (scheduled for later this year) are:

  • ASI Solutions
  • Acer Computers Australia Pty Ltd
  • Data#3 Limited
  • Datacom Systems (ACT) Pty Ltd
  • Dataflex Pty Ltd
  • Dell Australia Pty Ltd
  • Ethan Group Pty Ltd
  • Lenovo (Australia & New Zealand) Pty Ltd/li>
  • Hewlett Packard Australia Pty Ltd

Vendors on the panel will provide desktops, notebooks, monitors and thin client equipment. Defence alone has close to 100,000 desktop users, some with multiple machines.

The permanent panel was expected to be worth up to $400 million over three years.
