The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service has poached Australia and New Zealand Banking Group's head of technology — risk, Joe Attanasio, to be its new permanent chief information officer.

Attanasio will replace Michael Grantham, who had been holding the CIO position at Customs in an interim capacity since the departure of the agency's last permanent IT chief, the long-serving Murray Harrison, retired in September last year. In a statement, Customs praised Attanasio's experience.
"His experience and capability in leading diverse large global teams across all IT disciplines will make Joe an asset to Customs and Border Protection at a time when there is escalating pressure on government agencies to provide more with less, due to the current economic climate," the agency said, adding challenges would also come as it implemented recommendations stemming from the Gershon review.
The statement said in Attanasio's ANZ role, which he appeared to have held for some years, based on his LinkedIn profile, he had been instrumental in bringing about "a more professional, client-focused IT service, while developing a business engagement and operating model to make sure the bank was provided the IT solutions it required to achieve its business priorities."
A highlight of that time, Customs said, was Attanasio's delivery of the bank's Basel II compliance program.
Attanasio has also held several top-level technology positions at Deutsche Bank and TNT Group.
