AMD's long running battle with rival Intel took a new twist yesterday with manufacturer announcing its latest round of CPU price cuts.
A local spokesperson for the chip maker confirmed Australian prices have dropped in line with the US.
AMD's range of dual-core Athlon 64 X2 processors will now cost less than US$200, according to a list the chip maker shared with our sister site CNET News.com. The top-end Athlon 64 X2 6000+, for example, now retails for US$178.
The company has dropped two of its low-end models in the line-up -- the Athlon X2 3600+ and 3800+. Its new entry-level dual-core model, the X2 4000+ is just US$73.
In the high-end Athlon 64 FX line, the FX-72 and FX-74 now sell for the same price of US$599 a pair. AMD's single-core Athlon 64 chips now range in price from US$48 for the Athlon 64 3200+ to US$78 for the Athlon 64 4000+.
The budget Sempron line now starts at US$31 for the Sempron 3200+ chip, and goes up to US$53 for the Sempron 3800+.
Prices for AMD's mobile chips remain unchanged.
For its part, Intel is expected to cut prices on July 22 for its quad-core desktop and server chips prior to AMD's Barcelona introduction in August.
