The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) has purchased radio frequency identification document readers from United States vendor Viisage to verify Australian passports overseas.

The electronic document readers will be installed in 25 overseas locations such as Australian embassies to verify the authenticity of the recently- introduced e-passports, according to a statement from Viisage.

"We believe these installations will significantly enhance our ability to detect fraudulent documents before a visa is granted and an unwanted visitor travels to Australia," said DIMA spokesperson Janette Haughton.

Australian Customs and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade already use Viisage products to verify the authenticity of passports.
