ninemsn has some 250 employees in Sydney and Melbourne. The new IP telephony system is based on Cisco hardware and software and was installed by local integrator Netstar.
Most of ninemsn's staff now use software running on their PC to make calls (known as softphone functionality), but around 20 also have a handset, a spokesperson for ninemsn told ZDNet Australia this morning.
In a statement issued by NetStar, newly appointed ninemsn chief operating officer, Nick Spooner, said the new system will result in cost savings, as well as a reduction in downtime from technical problems.
ninemsn plans to implement unified communications functionality in the new system in the future.
