Will Feds get greater powers to track mobile calls?

Justice Minister Chris Ellison has refused to comment on speculation that Australia's Federal Police are slated to get greater powers to monitor mobile phone calls.

Senator Ellison said it would be premature to make any comment on potential outcomes. "In line with the Howard Government's election commitment, the future direction for dealing with organised crime will be discussed at the Leaders Summit in April," Ellison said.

Last week ZDNet Australia revealed that privacy advocates here would have serious concerns if Australia followed US moves to allow greater scope for tracking people's locations via mobile phones.

They already have the infrastructure to do this and probably already use it for high profile crimes... Whats to stop complete acceptance by the Gov, for the idea...

Another step that undermines the privacy we have been given in our society. You get given the rights, only for them to be slyly taken from you...

    Conspiracy theories....
