Wagga Wagga gets Unwired-style broadband

Pay-TV operator and carrier Austar today launched the first of a planned 25 regional wireless broadband networks, with Wagga Wagga residents getting access to the same technology popularised by Unwired in city areas.

In a statement issued this morning, Austar said around 14,000 homes in the city would be covered, with plans starting from AU$24.95 a month with no lock-in contract, and speeds ranging up to 1Mbps.

"Austar invested approximately AU$1 million to bring broadband to Wagga Wagga, with the installation of radio communications equipment on existing infrastructure at Willans Hill and Johnston St," the company said in a statement.

Austar plans to bring the technology to a further 24 regional markets by the end of 2007, covering a total of 750,000 homes.

The company said it launched in Wagga Wagga first due to an existing customer base of thousands using the company's other products.

Communications minister Senator Helen Coonan attended the launch, congratulating Austar on bringing what she described as "real and long-lasting benefits to people living in rural and regional Australia".

Local retailers for the service will include Dick Smith and Tandy, or customers can buy the product direct from Austar.
