Vodafone blames Optus for Christmas chaos

Vodafone customers using roaming have been reporting problems and broken connections with the service since Christmas -- issues the operator puts down to network congestion and a lack of help from its supplier, Optus.

The operator told ZDNet Australia that the problems are a result of congestion of international signalling links -- essentially backhaul -- provided by Optus, which Vodafone attributes to the volume of international tourism to and from Australia.

"We've put in a request to get the capacity [from Optus] but we're not getting much joy at this stage ... they've not been particularly forthcoming," a Vodafone spokesperson said.

The operator could not put a figure on the number of customers affected but said around 10,000 of its roughly three million customers are currently roaming.

The Vodafone spokesperson did not expect affected customers to be compensated for the inconvenience.

The congestion issues should ease starting 2 January.

"It will be resolved once people come back from their overseas trips," Vodafone's spokesperson said. "After we get through the New Year, it will change the profile of the network."

The spokesperson denied the problems were a result of inadequate forecasting on Vodafone's behalf.

Vodafone claims the roaming problems will not be repeated once it upgrades its network to HSPA, the faster form of 3G. The operator announced in December that it intends to move to HSPA by Christmas 2008, giving users access to a theoretical maximum download speed of 3.6Mbps.

Staying with Optus - for now! Anonymous -- 31/12/07

I've been considering moving to Vodafone but after hearing this, think it is safer to stay with Optus until they can look after their customers.

Staying with Optus Anonymous -- 31/12/07 (in reply to #320092414)

Don't you think that's exactly what Optus want ?

My ISP is Iinet and I often have to wait up to 5 days to get line faults fixed by Telstra.

It's my unsustantiated opinion that Telstra intentionally 'drags its feet' when Iinet customers are involved. Please note that I have absolutely no proof of this - it's just a feeling. [How's that for a disclaimer?]

However, I refuse to switch to Telstra - I just get angry and tell everyone who will listen about my problems in the hope that they will not give their business to Telstra.

I totally agree that Telstra drag their feet on any service issues/upgrades/fixes for non-Telstra customers (not just iiNet) . It's just one of their typical tactics to make you switch to, or stay with Telstra. I too have no proof of course, but many people would have had the same problem in the past.

I'll stick with Optus too. I get better GSM mobile coverage with them than with Telstra or Vodafone.... go figure.

Staying with Optus? Anonymous -- 03/01/08 (in reply to #320092916)

What did all this have to do with Telstra?
Ask iinet to lay their own copper and get the Big T out of your loop - and while you at it, ask them why VODAFONE BLAMES OPTUS FOR CHRISTMAS CHAOS

I am roaming in on Vodafone in Vietnam (which I do often)....and instead of the normal three different carriers that I can connect to, only 1 has let me connect in the last few days. No inconvenience caused, but clearly a problem.

    Very disappointed! Anonymous -- 01/01/08

I am a Vodafone New Zealand customer and was over in Aussie for Christmas. I was unable to send or receive calls or SMS from Christmas Day until I returned to NZ on New Year's Day!
Many calls to customer service gave no solutions and no timeframe to fix the problems.
Appalling lack of service from Vodafone - very disappointed.

My son bought a Vodafone prepaid pack specifically because it offered global roaming for his overseas trip & he hasn't been able to use the service at all. He's only managed to get through a single sms the entire time he's been away.

I'm over in OZ for 6 weeks from NZ and have chosen to stay with Vodafone because they always advertise their good roaming capability. Needless to say, Vodafone once again failed to provide a service they offer to their customers when it matters the most. Being away from home over Christmas and New Years Eve, the one thing that I wanted to be able to do is make a couple of phone calls to talk to my family and friends or even just to send a text message. Through all of this I was just able to receive one text message. I will never use Vodafone again.

Unfortunately not - this didn't work either! I could "see" the other networks using the manual operator selection, but was not allowed to connect to any of them - maybe Vodafone were blocking this as well so that if we can't use their service, we can't use anyone else's either?!

I am an ICT Manager and our CEO, Sales Director and Service Manager are all overseas at the moment. They are unable to ring, sms or even authenticate against the local networks in Germany, China, Japan and NZ.

This is absolutely appalling service but Vodafone!!! and to say theres no chance of refunding for any lost services, is even worse for Vodafone. I honestly cannot believe they can run their business this way.

We will be moving away from Vodafone ASAP!! I hope everyone else does exactly the same!!

I also have a voda nz sim card and number because i used to live there and since December 25 my international roaming is playing up soo much like right now it was working a few hours ago now not even working :S.

This really sucks like i know networks get jammed at new years but cum on! i would think at least a msg could get throu.

    This is a joke Anonymous -- 02/01/08

And I hope that ZDNet Australia continue to push the issue with Vodafone.

Roaming has been down in the UK since xmas day it sporadically came back over last weekend but since NYE its down again.

One can accept that text messages may get delayed on NYE, you couldnt justify created capicity for a special few hours like that, but to have no roaming for over a week is just plain crazy and clearly poor planning.

And is there a message on their website, no of course not...

And their international number is an Australian mobile number, real helpful when you are calling from overseas, would it be hard to have a standard 03 etc number so it wouldnt cost so much to be call...

And when you do call you get the call centre staff basically saying you should realise its a busy period and stop your whinging....

    My favourite part..

Telstra porting has been flaky for weeks and this is public knowledge... and Optus the most unhelpful organisation around to its wholesale customers.

And what has Telstra got to do with this?

And Optus may well be unhelpful, but who chooses to use them...

If as you sauy Vodaone are the worlds biggest carrier and so good why don't they build their own backhaul?

I've had no service since the 24th, Vodafone are just useless at giving a timescale or explaining the problem, i too have had enough of the crappy attitude of customer support "it's a festive season, it's bound to be busy"

Maybe not relying on one of your rivals to supply your backhaul is a step forward but of course the worlds largest operator would have thought of that???

Inconvenienced and expensive Anonymous -- 02/01/08

I'm actually getting my Vodafone bill increased because of this problem.
I was having holiday in Malaysia and Singapore. I usually relied on SMS to communicate with family members (e.g., when we need to find each other in shopping malls). However, this time the SMS was so unreliable (e.g., I just received my wife's SMS sent yesterday) I had to make voice calls, which at least I know if I'm not connected. I usually try to avoid calling family members while roaming because I have to pay for double roaming charges (i.e., for calling my wife's Australian phone and for her to receive the call).

im in nz for holidays from aussie - ive had no access to international roaming for over 10 days- being unable to contact anyone over xmas and new years period - vodaphone claimed this was due to congestion in the airways!, but gave no time frame for fixing the problem, 10 days later still no coverage. just rang them again and - they reluctantly gave me a 2 months credit! - doesnt make up for 10 days of no phone.

    Broken Contract Anonymous -- 02/01/08

    Blaming Optus/Telstra Again???? Anonymous -- 02/01/08

If Vodafone or anyone has a supplier contract with a third party (Optus or Telstra) to provide mobile or internet services - then dont blame Telstra or Optus when they don't work - blame Vodafone - they are responsible for managing the relationship with their suppliers to ensure their customers get the service they have paid for. If they can't manage the relationship - ask them why they are not building their own networks to remove the reliance on Optus or Telstra. The fact is that it is too expensive - they are all taking a ride on Telstra's back - separation of the Telstra wholesale arm will provide a level playing field for all their wholesale customers - of course it won't solve the reliance problem - after all - who has over 10 billion to invest in a duplicated fibre long haul and copper short haul network??

Being unable to txt or telephone whilst paying for it is infuriating: I'm in Australia from UK, (using a Vodafone UK service) and must also use SMS for security purposes which I've been unable to do since 24th December. I've been roaming in the UK and Ireland over Christmas and new year. I am SO pi**ed off with Vodafone. My phone did not work for about 5 days, including Xmas day and New Years Eve / day, and I missed so many text and calls with family and friends. I am switching as soon as I get back to another carrier.

Vodafone Worldwide Roaming Issue - Vodafone should tell truth John Treloar -- 03/01/08

Here are the comments from Vodafone from my first complaint on 24th December.

    1. Dear John,
    Thank you for your enquiry.
Due to congestion caused by Christmas traffic some roaming customers on the Vodafone network may experience intermittent call failures and location update issues. There is no ETR at this stage.
We trust this has addressed your query.

    2. Couple of days later:
    Dear John,
    Thank you for your query.
We wish to confirm that we are currently experiencing an outage with roaming in the USA. This is affecting most American networks that Vodafone have an agreement with. We have checked your account and confirm that it is correctly set up for Global Roaming.
Be assured this is being addressed as a matter of urgency. Unfortunately we have no ETA as to when full service will be restored.
Vodafone regret any inconvenience caused by this disruption.

    3. Day later after I wrote again.
    Dear John,
    Thank you for your response.
As advised Vodafone are trying to resolve the issue as a matter of urgency. Unfortunately we are unable to provide further assistance at this time.
    Thank you.

    4. After an angry email to Vodafone a day or so later, this response.

    Dear John,
It is always disappointing when a customer is unhappy with any aspect of our company as Vodafone prides itself on offering the best Network and services.
Vodafone is currently experiencing outages with roaming in most countries.
Vodafone regret any inconvenience caused by this disruption.
Please be assured that your feedback has been passed on to the relevant department for their collation and reporting purposes.
Once again, thank you for highlighting this matter. With your valuable feedback you have given Vodafone the opportunity to improve our business for the future.

    5. More 'we do not know what is happening' from Vodafone:

    Dear John,
    Thank you for your response.
As previously advised Vodafone is currently experiencing outages with roaming in most countries.
Unfortunately we have no ETA as to when full service will be restored.

    6. On the 3rd January (I though it was fixed by the 2nd??)

    Dear John,
As previously advised resolving this issue is a key priority for Vodafone.
Please be assured that your feedback has been passed on to the relevant department for their collation and reporting purposes.
Once again, thank you for highlighting this matter. With your valuable feedback you have given Vodafone the opportunity to improve our business for the future.

For me it's not the roaming but the fact that it has had a follow on impact on international texting. I have been unable to contact my husband and daughter in Indonesia with any confidence for 10 days! Messages get thru sometimes up to 24 hrs later. Or not at all.

Same problems with important business texts.
And yes I can phone - but not every day!

Nothing on the Vodafone site and nothing helpful from customer service beyond: 'we are working on this'.

    SMS Delays Anonymous -- 03/01/08

I use SMS to receive automatic notification of any problems with computer systems I look after in the US. Since Christmas these have been so unreliable as to be useless. Earlier this evening 49 SMS messages came in one after the other, as all of the delayed messages from the past fortnight arrived. Hopefully this means the blockage is now over!

Vodafone cop out Tim Morrey -- 04/01/08

Now vodafone claim this`issue was beyond their control, despite this happening every year & caused by them not buy enough bandwith from Optus

    Thank you for your response.

Due to unprecedented levels of international traffic being carried on the Vodafone network during this Christmas Holiday period, Vodafone is experiencing periods of congestion impacting International Roaming customers connecting to the network or delivering SMS.

Vodafone is actively implementing network changes to alleviate this issue. Initial changes have been made, with further enhancements being implemented in a phased approach to ensure network quality is maintained. Customers should continue to experience improvements as the changes come into effect.

We advise as per Vodafone's Standard Form of Agreement outages such as this can and do occur, particularly when using overseas networks as faults etc with these networks are obviously outside of Vodafone Australia's control. Further as per the SFOA compensation in relation to network issues and outages is not payable.

    Thank you.
