Vodafone Australia head goes Nordic

Vodafone Australia today confirmed Grahame Maher would leave the post of chief executive officer, effective 1 June, after a stint that kicked off in September 2001.

Maher -- who takes on the equivalent post at Vodafone Sweden -- is being replaced by Russell Hewitt, presently Vodafone Australia's chief commercial officer.

"Over the last 15 months, in his role as chief commercial officer, Russell has been instrumental in delivering our new sales and service model and expanding our new state structure, both of which have resulted in significant growth," the outgoing head said in a statement.

Hewitt joined Vodafone Australia from Hewlett-Packard in January last year.

Vodafone said Maher had "led the Australian business through a significant change programme that has resulted in a successful turnaround of the business, with a considerable improvement in profitability and returns for the Vodafone Group, as well as leading aggressive growth and positioning in the Australian market".
