Video: Conroy defends internet filter

video In this video, Australian Greens Senator Scott Ludlam asks Communications Minister Stephen Conroy to justify his comments that Sweden, the UK, Canada and New Zealand have mandatory internet filtering systems similar to the one proposed for Australia.

"Can the minister explain why he made this statement, in light of the fact that in not one of those countries is the filtering system mandatory, and the filtering systems in those countries are entirely voluntary, if they exist at all?" asked Ludlam.

In his response, Conroy pointed out the filtering scheme was only one facet of the Government's cyber-safety plan.

"I can assure the senator that the Government will implement the ISP-filtering component of this policy in a considered and consultative way," the minister adds.

The video appears to have been filmed by the Parliament of Australia and uploaded to YouTube this week.

Conroy's level of ignorance and arrogance makes my blood boil. There is no way had I known that Labor where going to do this would I have voted for them. Continue to fight for our rights Scott, you have my vote at least.

didn't we just vote this type of government out? Daniel Streatfield -- 18/11/08 (in reply to #320116224)

I agree completely, I was so glad when Labor regained power. It also seemed like they had become themselves again, not the Liberal clones they have been for the last decade. But then I heard of this, practically a complete defiance of constitutional rights and more blatant than all the Liberal travesties combined. Also, the fact it clearly wont work, coupled with the complacency it will bring to parents therefore harming children all the more makes me wonder what the true intention of this filter actually is, its not for the safety of kids, that's for sure.

Labor is right in that we need an internet filter.

We need an internet filter now, that will eradicate unwanted sites from existence, because we want to have a working and peaceful society. Not one that is based on terrible feed ins from criminal figures.

I don't think the tax payer should have to pay much for this, so if he/she does, i won't agree with Labor's plan, but i agree we need crap off the net, and those who disagree are ignorant or not smart.

    Where's the video? Andrew - Melbourne -- 13/11/08

I just tried to watch the video in this article and got the message: "We're sorry, this video is no longer available".

AH ... now I know why Senator Conroy wants to filter everything - so it doesn't look more stupid. Hang on ... has it been enabled already!?!

I have no problem with Government wanting to put some filters in place -- but at least give me the option to opt in or out of it!!!!

Talk about smug arrogance! Anonymous -- 13/11/08

He ignored the question. Smugly rabbited on about how much money is being spent and more or less ignored the question. He is yet another clueless politician who plans to do whatever he wants no matter what the supposed consultation process turns up. He really has no idea what he is trying to do and how costly and difficult it is to achieve. Even China with its much more oppressive system is not perfect.

This needs to stop Jay Godfrey -- 13/11/08

Ok is there anywhere that we can sign a petition or actively try stop this stupidity?

I’m guessing the world of proxies is going to get more and more hits if this goes through

Conroy has lost it Anonymous -- 15/11/08

Great way to commit political suicide. What stunning ignorance - who is advising this guy?

RE:Conroy has lost it Anonymous -- 23/11/08 (in reply to #320116365)

    "who is advising this guy?"
~Don't you know?... Adolf Hitler. Ever heard of this quote......

"The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benifit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation." (~Hitler).

..Even though, I remind you, the almost everyone OPPOSES the filtering. Don't you see? The parliamentary building was burnt, so Hitler used it as a great excuse to start WW2 (as far as I know from what I've read)....

And now this filtering. After you find bits from history, and compare that with the present, and compare things, it's not too hard to joint the dots. We will be living in a one world government one day, or at least that is the agender. What is planned is that we will eventually HAVE to use MORE identification (or some other 'thing') to just be able to buy and sell! (it's in the Bible).

Now might be a good time to start a lot of research and look stuff up if you haven't already, while there's still time.

What I'm saying might sound 'crazy' to some, but just remember, the man who once thought the earth was round, well, they thought he was crazy too!

Our time is running out, for when Christ returns, it will be TOO LATE. (example: Do you need to jump of a cliff to know what will happen?? In other words, sometimes when by the time we find-out about stuff, or "seeing-is-believing", it can be too late). ~I hope you (the reader/s) gets my point.

    Thankyou for reading.

Oh, the U.S.A, ..That's another story!!
