Union: Telstra to cut 100 Melbourne jobs

Telstra is on the brink of axing 100 jobs from its Melbourne global operations centre, the Communications Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) claimed today.

The jobs it claims Telstra has planned to cut, but is yet to execute, are mostly from Telstra's support divisions, including financial and business administration staff. Telstra has not confirmed the redundancies. "In their Melbourne Global Operations Centre alone, Telstra looks to cut almost 100 key personnel," the union said on its website today.

The jobs proposed to be cut were included in a leaked list detailing 600 other jobs the union claims Telstra has cut in the past three months. Roles included administrators, engineers, technicians, installers, designers, project coordinators and technical specialists. The cuts are Australia-wide, with the majority coming from Melbourne and Sydney.

The list, which does not reveal individuals' names, includes the suburbs, job titles, and business divisions of staff it claimed Telstra has made redundant. The disclosure comes just days after several unions and Telstra reached an agreement on the principles the two would stick to in upcoming enterprise bargaining negotiations.

Telstra has, after facing repeated industrial action, accepted the role unions play in negotiating work conditions. The Labour Government's Fair Work Act ushered in yesterday, which replaced the former government's Work Choices program, goes some way to setting rules of engagement between unions and companies.

The union said it was still keen to "work positively with Telstra" and to secure a new enterprise agreement. The union conceded that some jobs would be surplus as a result of Telstra ushering in its to-be-completed transformation program, but criticised the telco for being short-sighted.

"Telstra simply isn't thinking long term — where the National Broadband Network build will place enormous demands for skills through the requirement of 25,000 employees," the union wrote.

Telstra did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.

    It is time for Telstra Unions to wake up to the fact that Telstra is under sustained attack from Government and devious opponents intent on destroying Telstra which will ultimately see tens of thousands of Telstra employees on the dole queues.

    If the unions representing Telstra workers are reluctant to defend their members jobs, which would be a sad and unthinkable situation, then the employees themselves must demand that their Union Representatives do so.

    the unions shouldn't have to continually fight telstra. it is telstra who are the bad guys here, sacking *more* workers. some of who are probably your bretheren mum and dad shareholders.

    you are a disgracefully biased individual sydney, for trying to turn this around and blame the union and you do so for your own devious intent of seeing those shares you paid $7.40, which are now losing over $3 each, start to pick up, despicable.

    if the union turned around and did as you asked and fought for the worlkers by sanctioning industrial action against telstra, you'd be here faster than your shares dropped following telstras previous banishment from the nbn, crying that the union is deviously trying to bring the wonderful telstra down.

    Simon, what is your purpose that you continually demomize Telstra with calls for regulation and seraration that would damage Telstra and assist Telstra opponents.

    Could it be that you have financial interests that would be advantaged by the destruction of Telstra even though this action would seriously disadvantage every other Australian.

    I would remind you that every Australian, 40,000 Australian employees, investment in Telstra via Superannuation Funds and 1,400,000 Australians who own Telstra Shares (and for your information I am not one) are vitally concerned with the survival of Telstra.

    I did not call for Union action against Telstra as you well know, but reasonably asked for the involved Union to understand the situation that could adversly effect their Members and work with Telstra for the advantage of all.

    Telstra do not have to publicly respond but, I hope, they would be working with the Unions to keep retrenchments to a minimum and avoid thousands more in the near future, and indeed assist Telstra prosper to allow employees a bright future.

    sydney cut the lies. i haven't called for (further) regulation and certainly not for separation. show me where i have? this is why your comments cannot be taken seriously. because you lie (and assume, incorrectly).

    also as you know, telstra was floated with certain terms attached, those terms being regulated access for competitors. you can bleat about it all you like but those were the rules even before you bought your shares. if you didn't agree you should not have bought telstra shares.

    no unlike you who has a direct financial interest as a telstra shareholder i do not. i know it must be difficult for someone like you who comments purely in relation to his own finances, to comprehend that others aren't like you, but we aren't all here for ourselves like you sydney.

    RS if you peruse your dictionary you will discover the difference between the word "defend" and the word "attack".

    My thoughts have always been to "defend" Telstra, an Australian company that is under "attack" from competitors. Telstra, as is required, attends to every Government regulation.

    Opponents of Telstra are not satisfied to compete and let the Australian customer decide by choice but call for additional crippling regulation on Telstra to stifle competition and in fact create a monopoly.

    I am sure Holden or Ford would love to have regulation that virtually ensured that the free enterprise and competitive system was halted and their opponents were regulated out of the market.

    It has never been my intention to disparage any company, but do call for a fair go and a level playing field for all companies who invest in Australia and desire to excel by competition.

    Sydney, you will never get these idiots to agree with you, even if by some unforeseen chance, they thought you were right. They are simply hell bent on seeing Telstra doing it as hard as possible, for their own personal satisfaction. They hate you (so it would appear) simply because you own shares in Telstra, and they don't. You never hear them whinging about Coles and Woolworths, two companies that continually rip us off at the petrol pump, but of course that is a different story all together. I suggest you just ignore them.

    The only people who ever support Telstra are either shareholders or employees. Even then, some shareholders and employees don't even do so. That would make you one or the other as well.

    Personally I don't hate Sydney at all, as I don't even know him. I also don't hate Telstra shareholders. But what I do hate Sydney's ridiculous share price driven, greedy claims though.

    Interesting comparison. I find Telstra very similar in their price gouging as the big supermarkets too, but at least they have each other to contend with. Telstra really only have Optus who are much smaller as their only real competitor.

    But if people came here to say the same greedy, share driven c**p Sydney does about Telstra, in relation to Woolworths and Coles, I'm sure people would jump on their stupid, comments also!

    But no one is silly enough to support the big price gouging supermarkets the way Sydney and you do the price gouging Telstra.

    Which says a lot about your motives and sanity, really doesn't it?

    Terry, thank you for your endorsement, you are correct and emphasize my argument perfectly.

    Because Telstra is under attack from opponents who use devious excuses to encourage the Rudd Government to break up and destroy Telstra the jobs of Telstra employees are under serious threat.

    This is the very reason that I appeal to the Unions concerned to look at the situation and to defend and protect the jobs of the remaining 39,900 employees of Telstra. Thank you for your support.

    If that is the case why did telstra offer ECA's with 4.5% for the first two years and 4% for the final year of a three year agreement. Oh thats right they wanted employees to sign away every hard won condition they ever had.

    umm, no. Telstra like the other carriers are under threat due to the economic downturn, Telstra isn't the only one laying off staff, they're just the ones laying off the greater percentage, and the only ones consistently laying off Australian staff as a way of staying in the black.

    If Telstra really cared for their Australian workers they would stop their steady reduction in numbers and come up with a better long term solution.

    And no I don't support your proposition that it's the government or other carriers to blame, Telstra is their own business, their mass layoffs are due to their own business and trying to pin the blame on someone else is poor form.

    "use devious excuses" what's devious about being pissed off with Telstra and wanting something to change? Telstra have had years to get their stuff together but have failed. Failed to improve services, failed to help customers, failed to support Australia, failed to provide parity telecommunications services with our global competitors.
    The devious plot belongs to Telstra and as to why they want to keep this country in the telco dark ages? Telstra keeps dropping the ball and deserves to be penalised.

    "Conveniently ignored" as you put is, was because all you ever do (it would seem), is give Sydney heaps, simply for being a Telstra shareholder. If there was no shareholders, there would be no Telstra, or any other public companies for that matter, so why continually use the fact that he is a shareholder to ridicule his comments. Does not give your objections to Syd's comments, very much credibility.
