Telstra would extend ADSL with funding

Giant telco Telstra today revealed it would extend its existing rollout of ADSL technology to broadband-starved rural areas, if a bid for government funding was successful.

The telco and its rivals are currently competing for hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for rural broadband infrastructure under the federal government's Broadband Connect program.

Telstra's proposal would see the telco use some AU$600 million to extend its ADSL reach from a claimed current 91 percent of the population to a total of 95 percent, delivering speeds of up to 8Mbps.

The money would be used to "extend backhaul infrastructure to a range of remote communities, install ADSL broadband equipment in 1,560 exchanges and upgrade 1,029 large pair gain systems that currently prevent access to ADSL broadband services in rural and regional areas," Telstra said in a statement issued today.

The managing director of Telstra's Country Wide division, Geoff Booth, said the plan would target Australians whose only current broadband option was satellite -- a technology plagued by major latency problems.

Telstra's statement said communities such as Birdsville, Groote Eylandt, Marble Bar and the Tiwi Islands would be affected under the telco's proposal.

The federal government is currently considering a number of proposals for the funding and is likely to allocate the money this year.

So Telstra want funding so they can further gain a greater monopoly at the expense of the Taxpayer. Get rid of Telstra and bring some real competition to Australia.

My fear is that the 600 million dollars proposed to help broad-band Australia will go to dozens of tin pot telcos to be gobbled up and never help in any way to solve our broad-band problem. I do not believe that it would be acceptable to the average Australian for our Government to give this money to a Singapore Government owned Company (Optus/Singtel) who will take all profits out of Australia and with the possibility to damage Australia's Telstra and may cause the sacking of many Telstra smployees. Whatever happened to the "Buy Australian Campaign".

Telstra Could extend ADSL Anonymous -- 15/01/07

I live in suburban Brisbane and I can't get ADSL from Telstra (or anyone else) because there are no ADSL ports available in the Capalaba exchange and Telstra advise that they have no intention of updating the exchange to provide more. There is also no cable available and Telstra techs advise that their much promoted wireless network (which is slow, unreliable and expensive) also won't work in our area. How can they ever hope to provide services to remote areas when they can't even handle the cities.

    Telstra What a Joke Anonymous -- 22/06/07

I have been trying to get ADSL in Taigum, Brisbane.
There is nothing available on the Zillmere exchange. When townhouse and similar developements are put in (this particular one seven years ago), telstra does not have the copper services so it resorts to technology to supply basic phone lines. This technology does not allow Adsl. Perhaps the Government should add the metro suburbs to the country when they look at providing ALL Australians with affordable Broadband.

TELSTRA BACKWARD SERVICES Anonymous -- 11/12/07

I HAVE JUST MOVED INTO FITZGIBBON BOUGHT A NEW HOME HERE AND BEING IN I.T I CALLED TELSTRA REGARDING ADSL HERE AND THEY SAID YES ITS AVAILABLE NO PROBLEM, 9MTHS LATER AFTER APPLYING AFTER APPLYING LIMTED PORTS AT THE ZILLMERE EXCHANGE IT HAS COST ME THOUSANDS TO MY BUSINESS AS I CANNOT OPERATE IT TO IT'S FULL POTENTIAL AND EVERYHOME AROUND ME THAT HAS NEW HOMES BUILT HAS THE SAME ISSUES WITH NO PORT AVAILABILITY, I CAN GET DIALUP WHICH IS REALLY AMAZING.

I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE IN THIS SITUATION HERE IN AUSTRALIA
I CANT BEGIN TO BELIEVE WHAT
IT IS COSTING OUR DEVELOPMENT AND FINANCIAL STATUS AS A NATION.

SHAME ON THE PAST GOVERMENT FOR LETTING SO MANY AUSTRALIANS DOWN.
