Now I know whats wrong with Foxtel. Telstra owns half of it. Money grubbing scum who don't know how to innovate and simply use their market share to bully and cut competition. Die Telstra Die

You are an idiot and a troll!

A few roos short in the top paddock. Sydney Lawrence -- 14/07/09

Foxtel Anonymous, please do not be insulted with my remarks and I make them with no malice and with genuine concern for your overall health.

Your comment about Telstra displays a very serious mental unbalance tending towards paranoia with possible degeneration into schizophrenia.

Even if your comment reflects a personal hope for advantage by the destruction of Telstra as a competitor your thought processes are in serious degeneration.

With respect, and again please do not be offended, but to those with subject knowledge you are in urgent need of professional help to overcome your problem.

I think the horse has already bolted for this clown, Syd, and Jonathon's description of him being an idiot and a Troll is also being far too kind. Seriously, what planet do they come from ?

    The Solution RL -- 14/07/09

Yes, something is definitely wrong with Foxtel.

    1. It has just as much ads as FTA TV, probably even more.
    2. You pay $40 a month for a large pack of channels, almost half of them you don't really want. And the prices have barely changed over the years.
    3. I used to pay the early bird price of $21.90 for WWE pay per views. Now I am forced to pay the full price of $34.95. Some occasions I spend almost $70 in one month for WWE pay per views. I'm starting to consider downloading them from BitTorrent instead.
    4. Foxtel isn't doing enough to promote HD TV. Sure they have Fox Sports HD and Box Office HD. But what about FOX8 HD, W HD, 111 Hits HD, Main Event HD? Maybe even have every channel in HD if possible.

For all of these problems, mainly the number of ads on Foxtel, I blame Telstra for. But what we should be doing is putting an end to the Monopoly Foxtel has on Australia. Then we Australians might be able to get pay tv more cheaper. Hopefully the NBN will fix all these problems.

The Problem Bruce -- 14/07/09 (in reply to #320149633)

I am not sure you can blame many of these problems on Telstra. Thodey's comment in regards foxtel - It's just now profitable - is probably the real reason for these issues.

Stalled at approx 30% penetration and just becoming profitable. Until there is a compelling reason for the other 70% of us to subscribe - not likely given the content - then what you've got is probably as good as it gets.

One slight problem Mel Sommersberg -- 14/07/09 (in reply to #320149633)

Telstra doesn't provide the content for the Foxtel service, just the infrastructure. If you want more HD channels then write to Rupert.

One thing Foxtel could be more flexible with though is the choice of channels offered in their plans. I've never subscribed to pay TV and won't until I can have the cricket and footy channels with some documentary channels without having to cop the movie, serial and cartoon garbage thrown in for good measure.

    Monopoly ever heard of selectv

re: Foxtel RL -- 15/07/09 (in reply to #320150019)

Yes I've heard of SelecTV, but I can't get FOX8 on SelecTV, and I can't get the Comedy Channel on there either. The channels they have are lacklustre at best.

If we get rid of this Foxtel monopoly then we'll be able to get these quality channels from SelecTV, along with many other providers like, lets say, iiNet, or Internode, or Optus - wait.

RE: The Solution Anonymous -- 16/07/09 (in reply to #320149633)

    RL,
The reason Foxtel don't have FOX8, W or any more channels in HD is simply they can't right now as they have run out of Capacity.

Foxtel is delivered via Optus C1 Satellite that Foxtel uses is at capacity so Foxtel can't deliver any more channels.. this is also why most of the channels are compressed as hell and most are still in 4:3.

Once Optus D3 is launched Foxtel will have double the amount of transponders on that Satellite aswell as their current capacity so you will see way more channels and HD.

D3 was supposed to be launched a little while ago but Optus have delayed it.. it is now due to launch in August 2009.

Free and open enterprise. Sydney Lawrence -- 14/07/09

It is about time that the divide and conquer disingenuous deceipt of the Telstra bashers is exposed.

These people, for their own selfish reasons, hope to weaken and cause the break-up of Telstra and then plan to gain advantage from the wreckage.

Let open competition rule and require all who wish to compete invest the necessary capital and succeed or fail in open competition.

Hello Sydney, are you with us? RS -- 14/07/09 (in reply to #320149729)

Sydney you have this competition thingy all back to front. When Telstra were floated, regulated access to the PSTN was required to "create competition".

Seriously now, how could anyone starting from scratch, possibly compete with a government body who had 100% of the customers, owned everything and who didn't have to outlay any money to build anything or entice customers.

Telstra just repaid PSTN debt, once floated, with monies received. Monies which actually belonged to the commonwealth and in turn the Australian taxpayers? NOT Telstra!

These types of regulations are used worldwide, to create competition and make a more level playing field. They weren't just invented by our governments and that nasty old ACCC. They were and still are a commonsense approach to governmentally created monopolies.

Surely even a shareholder as biased as you can understand the rationale here, Sydney?

Those were the rules and shareholders bought in knowing the rules existed. So please stop the bleating. Especially as the ACCC are now highlighting areas where, due to competition, regulations are no longer required and phasing them out.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of regulation abroad and the ensuing corporate greed, even multi nationals have found themselves fighting bankruptcy and begging the government for handouts! Hmmm, they like you, wanted a regulation free market, without government intervention, until the poop hit the fan, now they change their minds, want government intervention and put their hands out.

So it now seems regulations will be needed to keep many companies afloat and to keep the b*******s honest.

But you want us to go in the other direction and give Telstra free reign?

And why, because you are deviously wanting to drag down Telstra's opponents and aide Telstra, for your own financial agenda!

    Afraid not.

re Hello Sydney, are you with us? Anonymous -- 21/07/09 (in reply to #320149796)

Tell that to all the people that bought Telstra, on the way it was sold to them by the Howard Government. I don't think they would understand your take on it.

    What's wrong with Foxtel Anonymous -- 07/11/09

Maybe it's monopoly thinking, maybe it's just slack management but, from the customer viewpoint it stinks. Their online programme guide is poorly designed and sometimes inaccurate. Even the tv guide broadcast while a programme is playing is completely wrong. Tonight Fox Sports3 was displaying "HSBC Golf" right through a 3 hour re-re-broadcast of the final game of the Baseball World series. That's not a unique occurrence. And if the service is as unprofitable as commentators say (how can it be when we pay so much for so little and then are barraged with ads?!!?) then we'll never get enough competition to force Foxtel to provide a better service. More trips to the public library, reading is healthier for the eyes and mind anyway!
