Telstra ushers in New Year with ADSL troubles

Telstra's ADSL users in Queensland have been suffering intermittent problems and packet loss since January 2, with the telco giant still no clearer as to what the underlying issue is.

Telstra technicians have been working on the difficulty since it was reported on January 2 and are -still in the thick of the problem", spokesperson Stuart Gray told ZDNet Australia.

"They're working through all the possible scenarios and eliminating them one by one," Gray said, adding that as yet there is no estimated time of repair.

Telstra has tagged the problem as an -intermittent and low-level issue", with the intermittence making it difficult to pinpoint the root cause of the problem.

Vendors are also said to be investigating what is believed to be a software or hardware issue. "It's not characteristic of a Denial of Service attack," Gray said.

    Telstra is helpless and useless, but this does not prevent them to commit day light robbery.

    So it's intermittent? Is that relevant? Heard of RMON 1,2,3

    Obviously telstra is forgetting about RMON, remote monitoring protocol that is used in probes to gather traffic statistics and packet capture.

    It doesn't matter if it's intermittent - these rmon probes would capture it - so you have to ask - RMON has been around for years so why isn't telstra using it?

    If they were, they'd know what is wrong? Or are they just feeding the mushrooms?

    Just got off the phone to our ADSL provider (not Telstra) who informed me that apparently Telstra rebooted the routers (?) last night in an effort to correct the minor packet loss problem.

    Our packet loss has gone from 10 -> 20%, to 40 -> 50% now.

    What's ultimately annoying, is I purposefully went to another ISP to get AWAY from Telstra, but until someone in the Government can see that Telstra is the set back for ISP/Communications problems, and splits Telstra into Services and Structure (Services can be commercial, Structure owned entirely by the Government) .. these sorts of ongoing problems will always insue.

    I have had ADSL since 22nd November and since then I haved had down time totalling nearly 34 hours and called technical support over 26 times and no one has ever been able to help, its the same comment every time "our technicians are looking at the problem and theres nothing we can do". I had better and faster service with my dial-up connection.

    The problem isn't restriced to just Quensland. As usual T(H)ELSTRS Engineering doesn't have a clue.
    ADSL Tech Support is an expense we could almost do without. It never has any answers, when problems with the network occur. They have two stock answers. One is a recorded message which is useless, the other is we'll advise our engineers. Wooppey do!! Just what one needs when the service falls over almost every day.
    The engineering department doesn't have to face the anger of its users, so it doesn't give a SH*T. Tech Support are all on Prozac, so they couldn't care less, either.
