Telstra, unions yet to talk pay

The Communications, Electricians and Plumbers Union (CEPU) says its talks with Telstra over establishing a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement are proceeding well, but the issue of pay hasn't been discussed yet.

The CEPU, which represents the bulk of Telstra's unionised staff, will meet with Telstra's human resources executives today to continue discussions around work conditions, CEPU president Ed Husic told ZDNet.com.au today. The scope of discussions relate to staff on an enterprise agreement (EA) and those on expired Australian Workplace Agreements (AWAs).

The two have been meeting on a weekly basis, said Husic, but the issue of pay has yet to be broached: "Pay will get discussed at the tail end," said Husic.

Husic today said that the union was "largely comfortable" with the systems used by Telstra to manage and assess performance of its workers. Other issues on the agenda include processes of making redundancies, such as the notice period, dispute settlement and maternity leave.

Telstra last month made a decision to freeze the fixed salary component of its top executives, while offering staff on AWAs a 2 per cent pay increase for the year. At the time, CEPU representatives said it hoped to achieve a pay rise of around 7 per cent.

BACK AUSTRALIA. BUY AUSTRALIAN. Sydney Lawrence -- 23/07/09

Excellent that the relevant Unions and Telstra are in discourse.

Now it is time for these Australian Unions to apply pressure to have Australia's Telstra granted a major part in the supply of a NBN to the Australian people.

Also of course to ensure that thousands of Telstra employees can be assured of their jobs and that an Australian company can continue to have a major interest in the Australian telecommunication industry.

so when they weren't in discourse, should the union have applied pressure to exclude telstra?

maybe they did, maybe they did? ha

Sydney - you roll out the same old crap on a regular basis. You just don't realise that as a consumer, I just don't care who builds it as long as it is priced competitively. To be honest, with the rubbish service and sky high prices currently provided by Telstra, I'd rather the North Koreans build it and have Kim Jong-Ill as the principal shareholder....
The British once had a 'Buy British' campaign until they realised that British Leyland produced some of the world's worst cars.
Only give it to an Australian company if they have demonstrated they deserve it. Submitting a 13-page proposal when the competition submitted a 1000 page proposal doesn't cut it mate.

Anonymous you do make a good point, however, what worries me is the fact that you do not identify yourself.

This leads me to believe that you, and other mysterious anonymous posters, are perhaps acting on behalf of Telstra opponents simply to disparage Telstra.

Lets have more honesty here and those with an opinion relate their identity to their expressions to establish their bona fides.

Sydney - I have good reason to remain anonymous, but have worked for a number of IT and Telco companies in Australi. I can categorically assure I have no allegiance to any of them. Frankly, (and in particular telcos) I think they are all as bad as each other. As a consumer, I currently have Telstra landline and Bigpond. The service stinks and as soon as I move house I will ditch Telstra for good and never return. Therefore, my comments are based on industry knowledge as well as being a consumer of telco services.

Nothing changes, and you are glued to the screen as usual, waiting desperately for the chance to exude more of your drivel. I'll bet you don't even know what day it is.

Good to see, and about time. But... Anonymous -- 28/07/09

    Isn't there alway s a "but".
I note that Husic has said it will discuss pay rates etc at the tail end.
This is a management ploy to:
    a) Tell the employees how well off they are and cover the "good' in as much detail as possible,
    b) THEN get to pay rates etc - after the good impression is made, IF there is sufficient time.

This lessens the percieved importance of pay rates etc, as it puts them at the end of the agenda.

The unionists will come away from the negotiations feeling warm and fuzzy about their positions, how lucky they are, how badly off they COULD be and so on.
Then after some time they will get the "hey, hang on a minute!" feeling... Too late...

It can be revealed here exclusively that Telstra are opening a Service Advantage centre in the Phillipines. After repeated promises that no customer facing jobs will go overseas, Telstra has again not kept its word.
