The 1,600,000 Telstra shareholders are profiting from the corporate bullying by Telstra. Telstra treats its customers like idiots and 'second class citizens' especially when it comes to broadband. The ACCC is there to protect the interests of the other 19,000,000 plus Australian citizens who are not stakeholders in Telstra and not to kowtow to the demands of Telstra.
Mame du Bois... It may be news to you that every man, woman and child in Australia has a vital financial interest in Telstra. The 1,600,000 shareholders, the 46 thousand employees, the millions of Australians who have their superannuation investments in Telstra and every man, woman and child in Australia who own the Telstra shares held for them in the Future Fund. So Mr. Costello be very careful what actions you take that may damage Telstra and Australians.
Sydney, Your bluster won't achieve diddle squat. Your 1.6m share holders is a very small minority of the 20 m Australian citizens who depend on the ACCC to protect us all..
Stop blowing your own trumpet!
The ACCC is a regulatory body, in case your unaware of it. It is there to protect the majority of Australians against the tactics of your boss Sol, and you.
You try so hard to convince us all that YOUR BOMBAST is in OUR best interests.
You will never get the monopoly you so dearly want!
So quit moaning, and grow up.
You people never seem to understand simple arithmetic!
100% of nothing = Zero, zilch, a big fat nothing!
What about all the $$'s invested in the DSLAMS going to waste, which could be earning income for all your shareholders.
Deploy ADSL2 immediately. You've installed it in almost all your exchanges, but it's gathering dust! Start competing and you'll start to earn the $$'s you so dearly wish to seduce from us all. You prevent all Australians from having a high speed broadband service, because you can't have your own way. Other companies can do it! and make a profit because they don't waste money on expensive executives who don't earn their keep. Why can't you ?
Stop moaning, put some effort into doing a decent job for the company, or go back to your home in the USA!
Keith, I like your style and you make me laugh. Only trouble is, gee whiz, so much of what you write is gobbledegook garbage. I am a fifth generation Australian who has spent the last fifty years toiling in a factory, and paying taxes, to make a better life for future Australians. Yes, you are correct that I do support Telstra, a great Australian company, and I would ask why you support Optus who is owned by the Singapore Government. Do you not realize that Optus profits flow out of Australia, and also, are you happy to see Australia's communication facilities controlled by a foreign Government. Telstra has tried to bring Australia into a leading position with fast fibre but if the Howard Government reject the Telstra proposal so be it BUT, Telstra will continue, by competition, superior products and services to dominate the market to the advantage of all Australians.
Superior products & services?? You've gotta be kidding!
Big Puddle has been charging the highest prices for the least service of any ISP in the Australian Market.
Given their present objectives we'll be paying $200 monthly for a 2MB capped internet service on a 10 year contract.
Grump.
Yes, every Australian individual and company does has a vital interest in a sound, competitive telecommunications network - regardless of whether it is Telstra or not. Instead of waving the Telstra flag, you should be asking why do so many people dislike Telstra? Why are other telco's successfully competing with Telstra. Telstra has had a massive head start between the development of telecommunications infrastructure (paid for by tax payers) and deregulation. Telstra have been given more than its fair share of governmental favours. If Telstra can't compete with that head start then they never will. The rest of the Australian business community works within the parameters set by the ACCC and Telstra should too.
Sydney - if you really are still toiling in a 'factory' after 50 years (!), maybe you should consider working for Telstra instead. Or, is that the Telstra 'misinformation factory' you're talking about?
Funny too how you're always the first to get a comment in here on any Telstra news item. Not sure I like your style at all. But you do really crack me up about Telstra having superior services and products ... :)

Peter costello needs to tread carefully when telling an Australian company what it should do. Australians do not take kindly to being browbeaten and treated like second class citizens. After so long in power Mr. Costello may believe that he was born to rule but it could well be that the little people of Australia will wish to differ with him come the next election. It is my hope that the 1,600,000 Telstra shareholders will speak loud and clear at the coming polls.
