Telstra retreats again on wireless pricing

Telstra today adjusted pricing for its wireless broadband service for the second time in as many months, introducing a new low-use entry-level plan and data shaping on higher use contracts.

The entry-level plan will offer users 200MB for $29.95 per month on a 12-month contract.

In August, Telstra announced a range of new wireless broadband pricing which included a 3GB plan for $89.95. This price will now include 5GB of data on a 12-month contract, plus will exclude any excess usage charges when users exceed the data allocation. Instead, customers opting for a 5GB or 10GB plan will now have their throughput shaped to 64Kbps until the end of the billing month.

Customers who exceed their data allowances on plans without data shaping will pay $0.25 per MB of additional data used. In addition, new customers will be required to purchase a compatible BigPond modem costing $299.

Telstra's new prices:

Monthly Plan Monthly usage allowance Excess data charge Price per month
BigPond Wireless Broadband 200MB 200MB $0.25 per MB $29.95
BigPond Wireless Broadband 1GB 1GB $0.25 per MB $59.95
BigPond Wireless Broadband 5GB 5GB Data shaped 64Kbps $89.95
BigPond Wireless Broadband 10GB 10GB Data shaped 64Kbps $129.95

    $250 / GB excess data charge? Anonymous -- 20/10/08

No thanks. I'll stay with ADSL and $3-4 / GB

Absolute ripoff prices from Telstra Anonymous -- 21/10/08

This is extortion on Telstra's part as other carriers are as low as a third of Telstra's price - and cover the majority of areas Next-G does anyway.

may be pricey, but Ripoff ? Anonymous -- 21/10/08 (in reply to #320114571)

Wow, sorry, I have to laugh, yes the Telstra prices may be higher than others and probably too high for most of us, but to make a comment as you have without any correlation to the fact that they also cover probably twice the others networks, which I believe totally contradicts your comments and probably close to or more than twice their speed, not to mention the fact that they seem to have good backhaul carriage into the network as oposed to companies like the big O who recently crashed QLD big time, is just mind blowing, I have to make the assumption that you live in a capital city somewhere and really don't get out beyond the boundaries at all :-)

On Telstra, we get high speed now, including upload speeds that are better than competitors' download speeds - needed for business-to-business email.

    With 3:
    - most streaming was too choppy or even unusable
    - tech support was ALWAYS a problem:
    - EVERY change was done improperly, involving long repetitive calls (always strictly to script, which I had to refuse to do to avoid another 20mins of the same 'do all the adjustments from scratch' on each call).

Plain ADSL - wait 6-10 weeks, need a phone line, and no benefit at our distance from the exchange.

Yeah, Telstra is a big, arrogant, manipulative, prick of a company, but they are the only one delivering high-speed (both directions) business plans at a price we can afford.

Telstra are thieves whichever way you look at it. emma marshall -- 18/06/09

They double charge for internet and hide it on their bills then refuse to refund it as by paying it `I agreed to the bills' thieves!!!!! With 2 mobiles, 3 landlines and a fax you would think bigpond would want us to continue their overpriced overrated service.....why do they get away with these prices? I'll tell you cause we don't live in a capital city and they are or were our only option for service.

Shaping should be standard due to the pricing Anonymous -- 25/08/09

Just had my third month on the 1 GB plan and had to pay extra $156 for exceeding downloads. Funny thing is that it never happened when I was on satellite with same download allowance. Due to the plan being 3 times the price of other wireless, I cant see why shaping isnt standard across the board. I am locked in for 3 years. Stupid me. Last time I deal with Telstra. Line rental is all I will pay at the end of this contract. Total money extraction scheme.
