Telstra employ a very strategic and usually highly effective pricing strategy. The strategy that they will price their offerings higher than competitors as they provide "better coverage, better customer service etc". For example if there are two ice-cream vans parked side by side and one offered a standard vanilla icecream for $2 and the other offered one with sprinkles on the top for $3. Unfortunately for telstra their sprinkles are stale and not up to par and are not worth the extra buck. In conclusion telstra MUST improve their offerings to substantiate the price. Oh and before you ask. Yes I do work for optus.
Next G justifies its additional cost over Optus' pretty poor 3G offering.
Despite the marketing hype, Optus' in-building coverage and geographic coverage is still very poor compared to Telstra's. Customers are willing to pay this extra (particularly iPhone customers) to get the better speeds and coverage. The pricing strategy is known as Value-based Pricing and it is clearly working for Telstra. Optus is 'stuck in the middle' and is neither a cost player or a value player. The Voda Hutch deal will definitely give Optus a run for its money.
I do not (and would never want to) work for Telstra.
And if Chewbacca is a Wookie, you must acquit.
