Telstra launches new blogging site

Putting the troubled history of its nowwearetalking website behind it, Telstra has re-launched its efforts to communicate with customers and stakeholders online, focused on a new blogging site dubbed "Telstra Exchange".

The site launched today, to coincide with the telco's annual general meeting being held in Sydney this morning. It features a news section, as well as blogs that Telstra promised will be about technology "from every view".

"Within this structure we're hoping we can inform the online conversation by introducing the people behind Telstra. People like our senior leaders David Thodey, David Quilty or Michael Lawrey, or hands-on employees like internet guru Jono Haysom and social media guy Mike Hickinbotham," wrote Telstra's head of social media and online media relations Kristen Boschma on the site.

Boschma added that she would be the overall leader of conversations on the site, which appears to take the form of a traditional blogging platform of the sort popularised by WordPress and Movable Type. Telstra's previous nowwearetalking site was much more complex, featuring several sub-sections.

Telstra chief executive David Thodey has also posted a welcoming video on the site, saying the site was more than just a corporate blog.

"Telstra Exchange is a blogging website... But it's more than that. It's a symbol, too, of our new approach to communications here at Telstra," he said. "That means it's a place for you to tell us how you feel, especially about innovation and technology."

The telco shuttered its previous nowwearetalking site in early September after its new chief executive David Thodey took the reins, ending its four-year attempt to change the nature of discussion in the telecommunications industry, spear-headed by former public policy and communications director Phil Burgess.

At times the site had become controversial, with Telstra using it to allege bias on the part of some telecommunications journalists, as well as attack rivals such as Optus and even the regulator, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Thodey's ascension to the CEO role has been broadly interpreted as bringing a less adversarial approach to the telco's relationships.

The telco also attracted a small flurry of interest today as it emerged that Boschma had only joined Twitter last week. However, the telco has a number of other prominent Twitter accounts with thousands of followers, including official Telstra and BigPondTeam accounts, and one popular account held by its social media senior advisor Mike Hickinbotham.

Disclaimer: the author of this article caused much of the interest in Boschma's Twitter account.

    Thanks! Kristen Boschma -- 04/11/09

Renai thanks for being gentle with me. Appreciate the warm welcome from all my new followers on Twitter. Nothing like a clean slate. It's been great to listen to everyone this morning. I look forward to a great exchange. Telstra Exchange really is there for you - so let's hear from you! Cheers Kristen

No worries! Renai LeMay -- 04/11/09 (in reply to #320390606)

    No worries!

I really like Telstra's approach recently, it seems to be winning over customers and the community. A much more conciliatory approach.

Agreed Renai. RS -- 04/11/09 (in reply to #320390631)

I agree Renai and have applauded Mr. Thodey many times for his conciliatory, commonsense and human approach (although it strangely always seems to go unnoticed by some)!

Now if these same handful of supporters and/or shareholders (who refuse to notice), the ones still living beneath that Trujillo rock, would stop undermining Mr. Thodey and the new improved Telstra at every turn, we could stop disliking Telstra.

And guess what, that, along with a solid agreement on the NBN and sans uncertainty, their precious shares may actually pick up?

Unfortunately however, these particular individuals are simply too burned (lost too much in share value) and frankly too stupid to look forward instead of back and comprehend what Mr. Thodey has already and is still achieving.

Unfotunately too, their Trujillo like egos and financial position relating to TLS, dictates that they will (along with one particular, likeminded official Telstra spokesman) soon infiltrate the new blog and make it NWAT (greed haven) 3.

    What a shame.

Funnily enough... Rex Alfie Lee -- 21/11/09 (in reply to #320390631)

... I thought the same Renai but recent evidence that has happened to a friend of mine shows Telstra's utter arrogance by using underhanded techniques to get customers to change. Not only are many of their subcontractors lying to get contracts but so did a Telstra operator. My friend suffered for 3 hours on the phone this month because of failures by Telstra to uphold faulty, contractual charges made by a subcontractor. Surprisingly, the voice contract cannot be found by the company & neither can the subcontractor (the surprise was purely for sarcasm). The next issue was when a Telstra employee stated that only Telstra can be used for a pensioner rebate from Centrelink for using a 3G network connector. The Centrelink operator also suggested that my friend check her bill next month bcoz Telstra is likely to have charged her for the 3G which is purportedly free.

This is the 5th month that Telstra have fiddled the accounts of my friend & each time it has seen 2 to 3 hours of time always interrupted by the hapless dropping out of the line by this infamously scummy company.

Why does it drop out after an hour? So that the customer will go away & they won't have to deal with them. SCUM!!!

    They haven't changed yet.

One Ugly Pig Thomas -- 05/11/09

    Pretty Much.

Talk is cheap, this guy is just telling people what they want to hear.

Most people are sycophants, and will believe anything just because it came from someone 'important'.

I don't understand how people respect this guy already. I thought you had to earn that?

More traditional platform Anonymous -- 05/11/09

It sure is! Have a look at the site source and you will see it is a WP site. At least TLS has had the good sense to use a standard platform for this maybe some are "getting it". I guess we shall see in 12 months what has changed and what has remained

NWAT 3 greed haven = joke! RS -- 08/11/09 (in reply to #320391048)

    Gee guess what?

I sent 2 comments to Telstra exchange and curiously, they haven't been published, what a surprise.

I simply said that Mr Thodey was doing a great job, but if Telstra wanted better PR, they needed to keep a few greedy shareholders from infiltrating the new site, otherwise it would simply denigrate to NWAT 3/greed haven 3.

Ironically since then 11 comments have been posted - 8 from Vasso and Sydney.

    What a (*&^%$# joke!

RS, this is my last and final attempt to educate you to the niceties and gentle practice of treating you fellow human-beings with some degree of respect instead of your hostile constant abusive and vindictive remarks.

RS you obviously are in possession of knowledge that would be an educational asset to those with whom you correspond, but your failing is the attitude and hostility of your delivery.

Naturally if you attack, disparage and insult people and display adversarial hostility you will never win friends or influence people. Please consider and perhaps accept this advice which is given with good intention.

Sydney, please enough lies, just answer the questions. RS -- 09/11/09 (in reply to #320391094)

Sydney, this is exactly what I'm talking about and as Vasso has already, limply pulled again.

RS 7/11 - ..."Typically though, in true Telstra fashion, when the going gets tough the puppets disappear or send a reply refusing to correspomd further...

    ...Both Sydney and Vasso have already done this with me (but once their embarrassment all died down they started again, lol) when I previously answered their questions and then asked them a few simple return questions, which they simply couldn't answer without incriminating themselves"...{END}

Following this comment above later 7/11 Vasso - "I will refrain from commenting further".

    "Lol"...

So are you going to answer or do the same as Vasso (as you clearly indicated you would above, lol) and refuse to answer my questions/correspond further?

Prove me correct about you and your motive$ again $ydney!

Still no answers RS. Unbelievable aye.

Goes both ways Thomas -- 11/11/09 (in reply to #320391094)

It was very rare on the previous site to see a negative comment towards Telstra.

This one will no doubt be the same. It is hilarious to watch Thodey talk about Telstra in an almost religious light.

I would bet my money that Thodey will be remembered for all talk no action.

Moreover, you don't educate the blighters, you train then.

Well you do it! RS -- 12/11/09 (in reply to #320391366)

You can answer for Sydney if you wish, Vasso, lol....

Get out the Crownies. Sydney Lawrence -- 14/11/09 (in reply to #320391381)

As Australians and all living in the one great Country, surely after years of turmoil it is time to honestly reflect on the communication situation we all face.

Time to forget past happenings and focus on the present. Australia, without Telstra cannot afford a $43 billion NBN system that would be a millstone around the taxpayer neck for decades.

Working together in the search for a win win situation NBNCo and Telstra can deliver a world class system to the benefit of every Australian. The solution must ensure Telstra and NBNCo attain mutual satisfaction.

It is consoling that Telstra owners will get the final vote on any deal agreed on for settlement with Senator Conroy having the final vote for the NBNCo. Talks are happening so we should not have long to wait.

Huh? Oh it's Sydney, of course... RS -- 14/11/09 (in reply to #320391601)

Another 24 hour backflip Sydney. Can't you take an antibiotic or something for this continuing infliction? Lol...

SL 14/11 (above) - "Working together in the search for a win win situation NBNCo and Telstra can deliver a world class system to the benefit of every Australian".

    JUST YESTERDAY...

SL 13/11 - "Why not simply let the Government build their NBN and compete with Telstra and let the consumer decide who they choose"?

Seriously Sydney, do you actually have a concrete position on anything (apart from TLS shares up = good)?

Or do you just make up this contradictory cr*p and flip-flop back and forward at will, daily?

Correction, mea culpa RS -- 14/11/09 (in reply to #320391617)

    Sorry affliction!

The Problem Sydley... Rex Alfie Lee -- 16/11/09 (in reply to #320391094)

...is that you have no points. You banter around talking about how we should feel for this Telstra company that shows no empathy for its customers & has so many jackals within its subcontracting base.

Further info on a close friend's encounter with "Telstra" & subcontractors. It's now 5 months that my friend has been screwed around with by the big T. The contractor & a Telstra employee both lied about separate issues regarding her contract. She was given a phone on a $65/month contract but she was to get it on $50/month. The subcontractor has disappeared & the voice confirmation has also disappeared. She received a 3G USB plug with it apparently for nothing. This was apparently only available in her circumstances through Telstra, a Telstra employee, but this isn't true. Centrelink have advised my friend to be aware that they may well slug her for the cost of the plug anyway.

Centrelinl have advised my friend that Telstra is dishonest. Oh shock & horror & awe.

Again Sydley, you lied as well. You stated that you had no connection to Telstra but the truth is that your wife has them which means basically that you have them. Your lies have gone on for over 2 years on this one. You call yourself a true-blue Ozzie. I tell you, you're a fink. A fink & a liar.

You support a corporate that does all it can to avoid being a responsible player. This corporation you support is full of dirt & scum & all organisations reflect their management & the players they align themselves with. As for the minions, like yourself, you also reflect who you align yourself with & that makes you neither a true-blue Ozzie nor anything other than the corporate you misrepresent when you make your statements.

@They who forgive most RS -- 22/11/09 (in reply to #320391094)

    Sydney.

You were simply trying to "educate me" to the niceties!

And here I was thinking you were educating "us all" on how to be a "selfish, greedy, disgusting TLS shareholder". One who cares only about his (wife's 70 000 TLS shares) and nothing or nobody else.

Gee how about that for a mix up, eh?

It is NWAT 3 and nothing else! RS -- 22/11/09

    Latest NWAT 3 saga!

    I was asked this - 18 Nov 2009 at 3:08 pm

..."RS: what is your beef about Telstra shareholders, eh??? Just because the Labour Government has trashed them you think that is fair and OK, do you??? I'm a Telstra shareholder.

    Again, what is your beef about Telstra??? Spit it out!! Tell us in 5 lines, don't muck around with BS"...{END}

This questioning was deemed most Telstra appropriate and posted!

So here is a copy of my reply (as requested) which was deemed most Telstra inappropriate and NOT POSTED (BTW - other comments have been posted since, so this is not a time lag issue) -

    19 Nov 2009 at 3:40 pm

..."1. Some, 'not all', TLS shareholders believe Aust's. comms does, or should, be based solely around their portfolios

    2. Some still cling to the rot Sol brought to Telstra, while Mr. Thodey is trying to move forward

    3. Some will blatantly lie, do and say whatever they can, simply for their shares to increase in value

    4. Some simply refuse to see the facts, recognize history or acknowledge that Telstra, isn't perfect

    5. I will add you to the 'some' list. Because, as you took offence, you are obviously one of them, proving my point"... {END}

    WE ARE LISTENING, THEY SAY?

Typically, I find they will let you say so much then refuse you right of reply, so it appears to the other sycophants that you are either unable to answer or have been scared off by superior [sic] Telstra intellect (yes something we know does not exist, lol)!

Does anything ever really change with Telstra?

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
