Telstra launches mobile Web services

Telstra will commence a trial of mobile Web services in Australia this month in partnership with its wholly-owned Hong Kong subsidiary, CSL.

The trial will start on October 20 and include major business customers and selected SMEs, who will use the service to access e-mail, calendar and contacts from the desktop and wirelessly through an i-mate 2003 Pocket PC device.

In Hong Kong, CSL is deploying a range of subscription-based mobile Web services and mail solutions which will be available on new smart devices. The services will be hosted in Telstra's high security data centre in Sydney.

The service will offer video news, real-time financial information, sports magazines, entertainment and restaurant finders which can be accessed via wireless devices. Telstra will also host Microsoft's Solution for Hosted Exchange platform.

The move is another part of Telstra's push to increase its revenue from mobile data, and diversify the source of the revenue. Earlier this year more than 90 percent of data revenue was derived from SMS.
