Obviously, the purpose of this is to promote the NextG network. They should compare the costs as the end user does not care what technology is used. Now that they are charging per kB, a modest 5GB of data for email which would cost around $900/month.
Is the technology worth it ?
For Telstra to say they will provide using ADSL they firstly have to be able to provide the ADSL service, over the past few years they have 'wired' so many new suburbs with pair gain technology that cannot have an ADSL connection. For these 'customers' the only alternative is an expensive wireless connection - if available.
Yes.. across the street we have a new suburb Middleton Grange.. no houses yet built but the telephone cable is in and surprise surprise its copper.. so much for commitment to provide a world class communications network. things havn't changed much since I left Telstra 15 years ago.
Oh thee of little faith. You must remeber that Telstra had 3 goes at wiring the nation to computers. There was that effort with Sinclairs Computers in an effort to mimic the French. (in the '80's?). Theyy could not give them away. Then there was On Line Australia, with the ON sitting over a line and which everybody called On Australia. Bad Logo and did not work. Now we have Bigpond. Amd if you switch from Dial-up to Broadband, you have all sorts of problems with mail addresses I am told..... Now we are told they can do the task. By Telstra.
You know what is funny about Telstras comments about the speed of Wimax, is that you can only get 20Mb/s from ADSL2 when you are within about 1km from the exchange, now there's a solution for rural Australia, most people I know in the bush are easily within 1km from an exchange, NOT.
Apples & pears - disregarding the only common denominator: The cost of bits/Hz. The good Dr. Bradlow is playing the Telstra game. Does anyone take their statements seriously?

How can they say that and expect to be listened to? They have a competing wireless network. MPs can add the letter to the file marked 'Willow Tidy Bin'.
