Telstra extends ADSL reach

Telstra said today it would extend ADSL broadband availability to an additional 400,000 telephone services across Australia by the end of March.

The heavyweight telecommunications company said the extension would be undertaken following 12 months of testing and investigation by Telstra Research Laboratories.

Telstra CountryWide boss Doug Campbell said "extensive research and statistical sampling" by the carrier revealed voice and data quality on telephone lines which also carry ADSL services remained acceptable to "at least" 4 kilometres in line distance from an ADSL-enabled exchange, "depending on the cable type and wire gauge". This was at least 500m more than the previously accepted limit.

Campbell said the move would impact most significantly on outer metropolitan and regional areas and was one of a series of measures designed to improve ADSL reach from 75 to 90 percent of services over the next three years.

"Telstra has been striving to put ADSL within reach of more households and businesses across Australia and we have now fully assessed the new transmission limit to make this possible," he said.

What a CROCK! Telstra is measured by the number of people connected. The business parks and industrial areas who are SCREAMING for ADSL still won't be connected through these lame-brained targets because they are using the wrong measure.

Telstra are trying! They are very very trying!
How they can charge more than 50% more than some of their competitors when they actually own the telephone cables and network is completely beyond me.
Anyone who lives within the 5km or so broadband limit from their local exchange should be able to have broadband with no problems, but I keep on hearing stories about Telstra only providing x number of services in one exchange, and y number on another.
Up until provatisation Telstra used to be probably the worlds best telco (best of a bad lot), ever since services have been gurgling down the plughole.

    T(H)elstra extends it's reach ...Anonymous -- 19/01/04

T(H)elstra extends it's reach like an Octupus because it is the dominant carrier & people will not shop around for the much better offerings which are available. People,..you can do much better if only you would look at the competition.
