NSW customers of Telstra's BigPond ADSL have suffered an extended interruption to their normal service since yesterday afternoon.
The Telstra service status page reveals the "connection/time out" issue began Sunday, 25 November 2001 at 12:07PM EDST.
According to Stuart Gray, corporate affairs manager for Telstra Retail, "there is no understanding, at present of what the problem is."
Although he could not confirm the reasons behind the outage, he said he does not believe that this particular issue is related to the denial of service attack that impacted on ADSL customers nationally, last week.
"As far as I know, this [ADSL outage] is not related [to the DoS attack]. With the Telstra attack, once it was identified, it was managed straight away," said Gray.
Telstra is unable to give an indication of when ADSL services will be restored to full capacity.
A voice recording on the Telstra technical support hotline states that "due to the complexity of the issue, we are presently unable to state a time when the network will be operational".
It is not yet known by Telstra how many customers have been affected by today's outage, but Gray believes the outages are "limited to NSW" customers.
The Telstra service page also lists connection and timeout issues for its Chelsea and Mornington customers.

NSW were NOT the only user to suffer. Victoria has had to put up with thruput of 8-10Kbps instead of my contracted and very high priced 512Kbps, all weekend.
Today (Monday) ADSL was off again for over 3hrs in the afternoon. Its evident the T(H)elstra engineers don't have a bloody clue how to run their network. November has been a total disaster. I hate to think how commercial users ever do any work, the service is so totally unreliable.
T(H)elstra keeps telling us the network is so complex!! What they really mean is; they don't have the slightest idea how to provision a broadband service. DUMB DUMB DUMB is the best description that can be applied.
They keep telling me I can leave and obtain service from another Telco. BIG BLOODY DEAL. I don't have an alternative in my Street. I could revert to the old 56K dialup, which never ran any better than 30Kbps. Some choice!!!!!! Although in the circumstances, it may well be a better option. Nothing could be worse than the lousy T(H)elstra ADSL service. I thought we lived in the lucky country. Asia has a better service. The gurus wonder why broadband is not catching on in Australia. The simple answer is; Its a lousy service & overpriced.
