In the latest round of restructuring at Telstra, hundreds of workers in three cities face redundancy.
The telco has announced 244 job losses across the country, with redundancies in Melbourne, Ballarat and Brisbane. A Telstra spokesperson said that the company "is attempting to move the staff to new roles".
The cuts have been slammed by the deputy national secretary of the Community and Public Sector Union, Louise Persse, who labelled the move a "direct attack" on Telstra workers and their families. Persse called for the government to take action and end its "crocodile tears" at the telco's actions.
The news follows another round of cuts, which saw 500 call centre workers' lose their jobs. Telstra has met government representatives in an effort to minimise the effects of closing 13 call centres.
More job cuts are expected in the future. In late 2005, Trujillo announced a plan to cut 12,000 positions from the telco over the following three to five years -- which is thought to leave 5,000 more posts scheduled for the chopping block before 2010.
Telstra's spokesperson told ZDNet Australia today: "We'll have to wait and see on changes in the future".
If the clowns in the Howard Government allowed Telstra to operate in a normal competitive manner instead of trying to force a false system which damages Telstra this situation might not exist.
I call on the concerned Unions to slam the Howard Government and demand a fair go for Telstra and it's employees.
