Telstra has flagged price reductions for its broadband products and services as it fights to maintain market share in the highly competitive sector.

Chief executive David Thodey said on Wednesday price cuts were "imminent" as the telco giant wanted to compete aggressively on broadband offerings.

"In some parts of the market we've gone too far out of line and we need to come back," he told an investor briefing.

Telstra's most recent annual results showed a drop in fixed broadband takeup, but its wireless broadband revenue grew by 69.2 per cent to $587 million.

A strong focus of Mr Thodey's presentation to investors on Wednesday was improving customer service. "We must focus on our core business and our customers, this is where we create value for shareholders," he said.

"At its simplest, the next stage in Telstra's long-term strategy is to focus on satisfying customers, invest in new capabilities, and drive growth in new businesses."

Bahahaha.. oh now you think its time to drop your prices because of the split..

Telstra - you were a joke, you still kinda are. You are very very lucky someone like David Thodey has steped up and trying his best to pull you out of the dark ages..

Too little too late I think but.

Hell no! if they drop their broadband prices, then that's a good thing and I'll certainly consider them :-)

Great to hear that Telstra finally get it! I'm still a bit sceptical but hope this is a sign of a new, relevant Telstra.

Relevant - Too late, they missed the boat

I just think it will be kinda intresting to see how Telstra goes against the likes of Iine and TPG for market share once the split happens.

Telstra is Pathetic Glenn -- 28/10/09

Telstra may drop their prices but I bet they are still twice that of the other providers for half the downloads.

I will believe it when I see it happen.

Based on your reputation I doubt you would believe it even after it happens.

Didn't I see a post from you complaining about Optus?

I sense fear and apprehension from Telstra opponents as Telstra, the sleeping giant stirs, awakes and by metamorphosis and like the giant phoenix bird, transforms into a competition slaying giant that will confound and defeat its opposition by becoming the sure and certain favourite of the Australian people.

finally they noticed that their products does not offer any value for money which i have been telling you all along. But as usual, you're too blinded to admit anything. Anyway, well done to David for admitting it, something you greedy TLS shareholders never will admit. Good on him for focusing on customers, happy customers = more revenues even if Telstra is split.

Sydney- you are crazy Anonymous -- 28/10/09 (in reply to #320389934)

I don't give a toss if they offer me the best deal in the world. As soon as I move house Bigpond and Telstra fixed line is gone forever. I am ditching because I have been ripped off for the last 6 years. Also, I simply hate everything Telstra stands for. Thodey is a good guy but he can't undo the loss of trust I have in Telstra.

Oh, how will Telstra ever get over the loss of your business. I'll bet your new Telco cannot wait to welcome you on board.( Duh)

I wouldnt use bigpond if i was paid to.

    Again...

    then your a f@#ken fool Anonymous -- 17/11/09 (in reply to #320389990)

if someone paid me to use bigpond, or dropped the prices, i'd use it in a second.

Its a bloody good service if your not such a lemon that you need to use the **** tech support =P

No Simon -- 30/10/09 (in reply to #320389924)

Sydney - fear and apprehension? Hardly, like most I will wait and see what Telstra does in relation to pricing, rate limiting, exchange access for their wholesale customers, customer service levels etc.

If Telstra do lift their game and are genuine, then many of us disappointed and angered by the Trujillo years, will be pleased and somewhat relieved. Telstra has stuffed comms in this country for over a decade so they have a lot of bridge building before old customers believe a word they say.

I work in a Bank that churned to telstra last year and let me say that after 12 months, we are not impressed with either their technical capability, their commercial acumen, their internal process or their supporting services.

Telstra: broadband price cuts "imminent" Anonymous -- 28/10/09

And it better be soon. They have some people in this country at ransom, as I can't get any other ISP to take on Broadband here and I was pushed into another 2 year contract with Telstra again. I was looking forward to going to TPG's more reasonable prices and download limits when I was told by TPG customer service that they couldn't do it here where I lived. In this day and age it shouldn't matter where you live, you should have the right to any ISP you want.

your not held to ransom... Anonymous -- 17/11/09 (in reply to #320389966)

you ransom yourself by living out in the fricken country.

They didnt pay for **** hence TPG cant provide a service.

    Grow up.

Short space of time? Anonymous -- 29/10/09

Yeah okay - at the rate Telstra can wheel out anything, it will be at least 18 months before a new pricing structure is put in place by the various managers, if engineering and/or marketing can get it worked out and a lucky contractor can put it together. They don't even have a billing system to support the current products correctly - how on earth are they going to sort out new ones? I cancelled my Telstra wireless broadband and went to 3 at half the price, I cancelled my cablemodem account and got ADSL2 from another provider at half the price with at least 3 times the downloads AND THEY DON'T CHARGE for UPLOADS - unlike Bigpond. How many staff out the door is the next discounting war going to cost?

I wait to see.... cross fingers.

Wireless Sales Increased Anonymous -- 29/10/09

This is a joke, their wireless sales have increased because Telstra will not add additional infrastructure to cater for the demand of ADSL/cable broadband.

CEO's don't announce unless decision is made Keef Hopkins -- 29/10/09

Do you really think that he would risk his credibility with statment like "imminent" without it being a done deal???

    New Terms Anonymous -- 30/10/09

Yes, but now to take advantage of the lower pricing, I suspect you will need to sign up to a new 10 or 20 year contract instead of the current 2-3 year prison sentence they currently offer.

I will continue to go elsewhere for better terms and probably still cheaper pricing.

Greedy shareholder James Mason -- 02/11/09

Sydney is a greedy shareholder as long as he is getting a few fist full of money at the expense of the telecommunications industry and the consumers who has to endure sub par expensive telecommunications and internet so Sydney just sits back and laughs at us all whilst he is counting his pocket money from Telstra.

Probably loves the movie "wall street"
