Telstra broadband down again

Telstra's broadband customers were forced endure another lengthy service outage this morning after a routine software upgrade turned into a disaster for the telco.

According to a Telstra spokesperson, a software upgrade implemented around 2 am this morning, forced a group of users issued with Docsis cable modems to re-authenticate and be assigned with new IP addresses.

The flood of users logging back on to the service caused a traffic spike that Telstra technicians failed to anticipate.

"We had some issues with the servers' traffic handling capabilities," said the Telstra spokesperson.

The bungled upgrade exercise caused a national service outage that kept most of country's broadband service offline for 12 hours.

The majority of service in Queensland and Victoria customers was restored by about 12.20 pm. New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia followed around 2 hours later.

Telstra said it was "very sorry" about the impact of the service disruption on its customers.

The latest outage is one of several ADSL and cable service outages that have affected Telstra's broadband customers in recent months.

All I can say is when choosing between Telstra and Optus for my broadband service, thank God I choose Optus. That was close to two years ago. The amount of problems with DSL, Broadband and the download limits are a joke. This is from someone who owns alot of Telstra shares. I'm really surprised Optus cannot force them to get their act togather. I thought that whats competation all about.

What they really mean is "THEY'VE screwed up AGAIN". They are sorry! How quaint. Again what they really mean is; Our contract with customers, lets us do anything without accepting ANY responsibility. To hell with the customer, he only pays the bills.
