And has Telstra provided the Australian community with information on the currrent state of the copper network and what the real costs of maintaining it? No.

It's a bit rich for Telstra to complain that others are not being open when their refusal to participate openly is the direct reason that no agreement can be reached on the real cost of implementing the next network on Telstra's ageing copper.

But you know why the Government and Telstra are reticent to get these figures to the public? Because it will show that the Govt knew all along the poor state of the copper network and its inadequacy for a nextgen implementation. It will then be obvious that Howard and Costello sold all the mums and dads a pup - a poor quality copper network that's very expensive to maintain.

It's in Telstra and the Govt interest to keep this information secret, so the process of open evaluation of costs can be stymied.

Should the information about network quality and maintenance costs be revealed, it will most likely raise the question :

"Why are we even considering using Telstra's copper for the last mile?".

Burgess has the nerve to criticise the fact that G9's access undertaking is being kept secret? Where was the public disclosure for Telstra's own FTTN submission?

    Democratic? Angus Boag -- 08/05/07

What kind of a democratic society do we have when a govt gives a private company a huge public infrastructure, essentially creating a private monopoly where there was once a public service?
