Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said stage three of the roll-out would extend to 90,000 premises in the "major population centres of Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie".

An equity injection of $100 million would be made by the Federal Government into NBN Tasmania, the company charged with building the broadband network, to enable the roll-out of stage three.

"Detailed design work is now under way for stage three with 40,000 premises in Hobart, 30,000 in Launceston and 10,000 in each of Burnie and Devonport," Conroy said.

Conroy did not mention start or end dates for the roll-out, although he did say that the completion of stage one — linking the towns of Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point — was on track for July, when the communities would start to receive services.

The minister's office today said NBN Tasmania would soon invite residents of these communities to attend community forums, to provide information on the NBN and how it will benefit them.

"As design and construction work for stages one, two and three progress, details of further stages will be released," the minister's office said in its statement.
