Talkfest on telcos comes to Canberra

The hallowed halls of the Old Parliament House are set to provide the backdrop for a gathering of Australia's pre-eminent researchers into the telecommunications industry for the annual Communications Research Forum, planned for early October.

Now in its tenth year, the forum features a range of speakers from Australia and abroad and is set to focus on regulation in the telco sector. The forum will also feature the presentations of 40 research papers covering areas as diverse as trends in bandwidth trading, and the psychological ramifications of Internet use.

-The agenda is an attempt to pick up and spread the sort of research being done in communications," explained forum manager, David Williamson. -It covers the outcomes of policies and analyses data on telecommunications and broadcasting."

While Williamson said the forum was primarily aimed at academics and researchers working in the field, he pointed out that industry players would gain from this year's focus on trends in regulation and government policy, and how these in turn affect the telecommunications sector.

-It is more something catering for the research community and disseminating current thinking in this area," Williamson said.

The conference is expected to attract up to 250 attendees and will also host a student research competition, open to honours and postgraduate students conducting research in the area.
