Sydney to host new wireless broadband network

Sydney's north shore is poised for pre-commercial testing of a new wireless broadband network, with trials set to start this week.

The I-BURST wireless broadband technology is being deployed by a consortium of industry heavyweights, including CKW Wireless, OzEmail and Vodafone.

The first two i-BURST base stations have been installed in the Sydney suburbs of Chatswood and St Leonards. These will be joined by a further 10 base stations situated around Sydney, covering 150 square km.

The technology works over the 3G spectrum and reduces the cost of supplying the service by using one channel for both uploaded and downloaded traffic, instead of two. It offers speed of up to 1 Mbps.

"The first base stations and user terminals are here and wireless Internet packets are flowing across Sydney," said Judy Slatyer, director, CKW Wireless. "With the spectrum licence only released last month, having the system up and running so soon is testament to the expertise and commitment of all the consortium members."
