Sydney is set to have the first of eight data centres currently being created for the rollout of Global Hosting, announced by multinational voice/data solutions provider, Global One.
The Global Hosting service will "offer an integrated set of managed hosting solutions to help multinational corporations-its traditional customers-and large national corporations migrate into the e-business world."
Global Hosting will seek to provide users with a secure connection to the Internet, a corporate intranet and co-location inside the company or on the Internet itself. This is in addition to Web hosting, messaging, groupware and deployment of a completely managed extranet.
This extranet includes what Global One refers to as a "demilitarised zone" between the company intranet and the Internet that enables users or external partners secure access to services such as mail relay and Web hosting when outside.
"The advantages of Global Hosting come from the bundled components that meet the fast-growing demand for outsourced e-business solutions and applications," said Global One Chief Operating Officer, Michel Huet.
According to Richard Knott, managing director of Global One ANZ, while internal IT departments might disagree, companies are increasingly requiring services such as mail platforms, firewalls or even general Web design to be provided externally. Knott says the company is ramping up for a big launch in October, when Sydney's centre will be complete. Global One's local customers currently include the free
ISP Global Freeway and international e-business company Adero.
The seven Global Hosting Centers joining Sydney-all scheduled for completion by first quarter 2001-will be located in Reston, Miami, Paris, Rennes (France), London, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Another six centres are planned for later development. ENDS
