SmartyHost offers compensation after customer downtime

Web hosting provider SmartyHost has offered to compensate customers whose Web sites have been inaccessible after it migrated them to a new data centre last week.

On Tuesday night, SmartyHost migrated several thousand sites from Primus to its new hosting provider, Optus.

SmartyHost managing director Anoosh Manzoori said his company had e-mailed customers the Sunday prior to the migration, asking them to change their username to a five-digit number, a security requirement of the new facilities.

However, some long-standing customers had not kept their contact details up to date, and did not receive the message, Manzoori said.

This meant their sites were not available once the changeover occurred, he said.

"This is not an outage situation, it's an upgrade to a better service.

"The main problem is on a site-per-site basis where the DNS hasn't propagated.

"So we have to verify who they are, and change their e-mail address or other details."

The new system allows customers to update their contact details in real-time.

Several SmartyHost customers have complained about the migration to ZDNet Australia.

Complicating matters, global domain name registry VeriSign suffered an outage with its domain name system services around the time of the migration, according to Manzoori.

This meant anyone making such a change had to wait another 24 hours before the redirected IP addresses would be recognised and take effect.

"The technical problems weren't all under our control," he said.

SmartyHost also encountered problems with its phone systems last week, and had asked technicians to restore normal service.

"We've hired additional staff and have contracted a call centre to call every customer affected and help them," he said.

It would take "another day or so" to call all affected customers, Manzoori said, by which time he expected the issues to be resolved.

There would also be a compensation offer for those affected, he said.

"We'll be sending a formal letter with compensation on the monthly account [fee]."

While unsure of the number of customers affected, Manzoori said it was a "minority".

"We're not sure on the numbers, there's so much duplication in the support system.

"But we're giving priority to the phone [requests]," he said.

SmartyHost launched an online chat facility on Friday to help affected customers contact the company.

Manzoori said another reason for some customers not being migrated was non-payment of outstanding bills.

The customer migration problems come after SmartyHost made a bid for the high-end corporate market last week with the launch of its new SmartyCorp service.

SmartyHost has 25,000 customers and claims to be the number two Web hosting provider in Australia behind WebCentral.

What a spin doctor Anonymous -- 15/05/06 (in reply to #120134368)

Well my contact details were correct, and my bills are paid a year in advance - but no notification email. Funny because I've been able to log in and confirm the email address on record was correct - they just didn't contact me. As Anoosh is on record as saying, "you can have the worst product but the best marketing plan".

Who have these reporters spoken to? Anonymous -- 15/05/06

This was the most botched "migration"! My contact details were totally up to date, yet I received no contact prior. SmartyHost tried to do the actual migration of files with a tiny 1-1/2 page php script procedure that simply dumped files across without any regard to file arrtibutes or permissions and without any form of error checking. My files were moved one week before the dns records were changed. They moved both primary and secondary dns servers at the same time. The dns errors were at SmartyHost's end - I have the logs to prove this. Despite raising the dns misconfiguration issues prior to the weekend, apparently no-one with high enough authority to access their dns server was available over the weekend, so my / our domains were in oblivion for another two days whilst some technician enjoyed their weekend!

What nonsense. My email has now been down for a week. No email recieved about changed login. All emails lost and now all incoming mail bounced for a week.Contact details up to date.
    phone number up to date.

No access avaialble to smartyhost phones - full.

No access to web based help - closed down.

This is a major stuff up no improvement.

    Smartyhost migration Anonymous -- 15/05/06

Another site's files were copied into my directories by the migration process so that their site displayed not mine. Who are they going to blame for that?

I was eventually able to fix my problems but my sev 1 from last Wednesday was never answered.

Now they are threatening to cut me because my site is over its limit but they caused the problem by copying the wrong files into my directories.

You shouldn't just rely on Smartyhosts spin which seems to blame everyone else. See the pain people have experience by visiting http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=520024&ign=1

    Never apologise Anonymous -- 15/05/06

That's the first rule to follow if you want a pr disaster. Good one Anoosh. First you informed me of nothing beforehand. Secondly you failed to respond to my lodged support ticket and email. Thirdly when I finally got someone to talk to me after three days of no emails they tried to blame me by saying my account was up to date. When I furnished proof of advance payment (two years) they said I would be up Saturday. Finally came up today. Took an hour to reset my accounts from scratch (not helped by the lack of real aliases my access address is now a number mNNNN instead of me@domainname.com.au.)
Final insult came after all that with an account statement to my external email address (the one you couldn't use to warn me last week) to tell me my hosting expires one year from today (remember the two year's payments). Blaming the client will only get you a mass exodus.

SmartyHost tell lies, big lies and nothing but lies Anonymous -- 15/05/06

I have been lied to and deceived by SmartyHost, and in particular, their managing director, Anoosh Manzoori, since signing up with them in 2004.
I am ashamed of not being braver and moving before, but this botch up is the straw that broke the camel's back.
No courtesey email to warn of upcoming migration (my details and account are up to date).
    No phone support.
    No help desk.
I logged into the live chat on Saturday and was told there were 6 calls before mine, but AI would be contacted shortly. Well, it is end of business on Monday and I haven't hear a squeak!
I have spoken to several other hosts today who have bent over backwards to accomodate my needs.
SmartyHost? Not so smart at all.

You have to be joking Anonymous -- 15/05/06

What this man says has little relation to the facts. We recently had a website with smartyhost. When it went down we were unable to get any help from "support". We have since moved to a new host but hold little hope of seeing our money again.

    Not so Smart Kevin A -- 15/05/06

I have 4 sites and 5 domain names with SmaryHost. I've put up with the regular downtime and shoddy support because the price was so low. I'm embarassed to say that I've even recommended them to my friends. One of my sites is still down after 2 weeks. It wouldn't be so bad if SmartyHost were cheap and nasty.. but they're also full of BS.

    Digging a DEEPER HOLE Anonymous -- 16/05/06

I have a number of sites with Smartyhost and can ASSURE people all is not well . One of my sites still isnt fully operational even as I type this. I have never replied to anything like this before but found this site while searching for " smartyhost problems" .

Smartyhost Goodbye! Debra Maloney -- 18/05/06 (in reply to #120134389)

As the previous disatified smartyhost customer has stated I have never been in a internet hosting forum before but due to being without my website and my email for a week and having no responce from our Mr Annoush am slightly angery.
I'm Being Sarcastic with the slightly bite.

Anyway - I have three websites with dummyhost. Two of them I was sent emails about the server change - but on the Monday afternoon. Only 1 day before the move. These emails implied that they were going to proceed in small customer quantities and that these two websites were amoungst the first to move.
I didn't recieve any info regarding the third website which is my own website.
It is M.I.A. By the way they didn't send out an email asking for the password to be changed for the other two websites on the sunday night so why would they for the third website.
The ACCC should be notified in this case.
I am losing money and valuable information and communications because of this.
Smartyhost expect a bill from me.
I advice all others to do the same.

SmartyHost very poor service Anonymous -- 16/05/06

I will cheer when this company goes down the pan - I wonder if one could set-up a class action and sue them? Their support isn't called support it is called 'Fast Support', rubbish, my site was down, logged 3 reports via the web, tried to call but never ever got through, in the end got someone on the web site support chat (which shuts between 1 and 2pm).
Do not host with SMARTY they are a total con.

Contact me? As if! Anonymous -- 16/05/06

I have had hosting with SmartyHost for more than 5 years and I have always kept my details up to date, but I was never contacted by them to tell me that I was going to have my services migrated over to the new servers with Floptass.
So I was very surprised when I was unable to recieve any emails or anything. Then they made changes to their email service which meant that all email addresses needed to be setup again, meaning yet more work. THEN we get to the wonderful migration of files. When you move stuff to a new server all configuration files had to be updated to meet the specs of the new server, plus there is also the issue of CHMOD. SmartyHost took no consideration to the fact that I might have some files and directories chmodded so I can run my PHP scripts a certain way. No they were just dumped and left for dead.
Migration issues affecting a few customers, I think it was a few thousand.
Plus alot of the time their helpdesk is still uncontactable. Forget pressing 1 for technical support, press 2 for sales. As they are still making sure their new customers are able to get through!!!

    Dysfunctional Smartyhost Anonymous -- 16/05/06

    Website still not up.
    Emails still missing.
SQL database apparently lost with 2000 subscribing members @ $50 a year. Do the maths on that compensation claim.
And still no response from Smartyhost.

Visit the thread at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=520024 for some possible assistance - many of us have been able to do SQL exports of our databases through the phpMyAdmin interface at the original site's IP address, and rebuild databases at another hosting company. Saved our butts.

    absolute debacle Anonymous -- 16/05/06

Not only did they mess up the migration but they had not thought to migrate users email boxes or, even worse, email address lists.
What planet do these people live on?

Everyone Elses Fault Darren Turnbull -- 16/05/06

They take no blame for this mess, just blame the customer, unbelievable! My details were up to date, account paid and yet they never notified me and I have not been able to contact them for a week. Their phones, email, support web site and chat facility are worse than useless. I will be moving my domains.

48 hours later and still problems Anonymous -- 16/05/06

Well its 48 hours later at least and still customers are complaining

    Unforgivable catastrophic blunder Creative 9000 -- 16/05/06

Smarty's migration has been a nightmare and is a lot more serious than Anoosh will have you believe.

All of my smarty hosted client sites had issues. One in particular had no email for several days and no web site for a week! He has also lost revenue due to having no web site.

My web site also had issues. When they migrated the site, they used an old version of my front end and an even older version of my database. Just brilliant. If I could FTP in I could fix the problem but alas I could not even do that. After 3 days of attempting to phone them and about 100 attempts to get through to the live chat support on their web site, I eventually got some help and was able to resolve my problems.

As soon as everything is back to normal I plan to move all my clients to a different host. Additionally, I plan to send Smarty an invoice for all the time I have consumed trying to work around their blunder. This is their fault - make no mistake – and they need to be made an example of. I suggest everyone else take similar action.

legal action against smartyhost Anonymous -- 21/05/06 (in reply to #120134431)

no warning of the changes. no email for two weeks. two commercial websites down for more than a week. daily emails to smartyhost. phonecalls to a full voicemailbox. online chat function that doesn't work. finally an email regarding one of the affected services, with a password that doesn't work. what a joke.

anyone else suffered commercial losses and prepared to take action against these jokers?

legal action against smartyhost Anonymous -- 10/07/06 (in reply to #120134724)

Would love to take em to court or a least receive compensation. However with my ecommerce website down there is no income to pay for the legal costs. Smartyhost turns out to be a Dummyhost from my perspective and I have paid for three years worth of Dummyhosting! Any legal eagles out there who want to offer up their time to take out the supposed number two web hosting co and take the chip off their shoulder!

SmartyHost migration issues Anonymous -- 17/05/06

My Clubs website is hosted by Smartyhost. It's amazing how the emails get through when it's time to renew, but not when it involves a significant change like this. In reality the Website was never transfered as the database behind it needed to be restored. This means no planning, no risk assesment or mitigation.. real business would have gone out of business over this.

3 Days Warning - Poor Planning more like it! Anonymous -- 19/05/06

So.. its always someone elses fault, the customers, the DNS resource from VeriSign, the..., rubbish..! For SmartyHost with 25,000 customers and to give customers 3 days notice of service migration without checking ALL customer details and that they were verified PRIOR to migration is inexcusable.
3 days is simply NOT enough time, 3 weeks minimum in my book would be borderline to confirm customer details, looks like they planned this project exceptionally well, not. And because of this sloppy planning, WebCentral will reap the rewards. SmartyHost? I think not, I have another name for them and you can use your imagination of what that might be.

    What compensation Anonymous -- 01/06/06

I have been asking the company regarding the compensation mentioned inthe ZDNet story....not a word back.

This goes along with the continuing webmail outages...it's down at the moment for the 4th time this week.

    What a joke.

3 WEEKS 47 MESSAGES & NO REPLY & NO EMAILS OR WEBSITE Anonymous -- 01/06/06

Smartyhost have shut my website down and blocked my emails for the last 3 weeks. I have rung them and left a total of 47 messages and still have not received a reply. I run a business and it is causing alot of grief as my customers are ringing complaining that emails are getting bounced back and thinking that we have gone out of business.

I dont understand why a company would not return my calls

I am extremely irrate and just looking for some help.

    What Compensation? Anonymous -- 10/07/06

Very true all I get from the Smarties at Dummyhost is polite reports that it is not their fault they are at the mercy of their suppliers who did not supply the right server equipment, perhaps in a couple of weeks they would get the new server right and it would be functional? No mention of compensation!

    January 2007- SMARTYHOST ISSUES Luke(y) Skinner -- 21/01/07

I have been having serious issues since January 17- and my website is about to hit its 1 year anniversary. This is gravely dissapoionting from Smarty Host. Since Thursday I have been attempting to contact them, but they are on the other side of Australia and by the time I finish work so are they.

Nothing is getting done and its now 4 days including Thursday. The error occured between 2:20am and 4:30am at which time I - the only administrator of my website, was asleep.

Therefore the issue is SmartyHosts to deal with and has progressed now to the point of having my domain apparently no-longer accessible online.

smartyhost keeps getting hacked no no -- 13/09/07

smartyhost has been hacked multiple times. Not once was i contacted, I had to request support and ask wtf was going on.

The last time they were hacked support attepted to tell me my site was hacked because register_globals (php) was turned on. Pretty sure the person at the other end had no idea wtf register_globals was. even so, I protect all my code from register_globals problems anyway. Again, how is someone going to know my variable names without seeing the source anyway? They'd have to be a pretty good guess.
