SmartyHost dumps Primus

SmartyHost has dumped Primus' hosting services in favour of Optus, and will use the latter telco's Sunshine data centre to host more than AU$650,000 of new equipment from Dell and EMC.

"The Optus facility is a lot better," said Anoosh Manzoori, SmartyHost's managing director. "The Sunshine data centre we use is more of an exchange than just a plain data centre. It is more geared to large enterprises than Primus' facilities."

Manzoori said the move to Optus is motivated by a desire to improve quality of service ahead of new product launches aimed at corporate customers.

"Corporates have consistently asked us for dedicated hosting," Manzoori said. "So we will soon launch a product called SmartyCorp for this market".

Manzoori declined to outline the details of this product, but said it will see his company branch out from hosting on Red Hat Enterprise to for the first time offer Windows-based hosting products as well.

"We want to become a full service hosting firm," he said, "We have plans to introduce ASP models and other products".

All of these new services will be offered from the Optus data centre, where the company has installed 20 new "high-end" Dell servers at a cost of AU$500,000 and a AU$150,000 EMC Clariion storage area network. "One of the benefits of our new solution is that for the first time we will not store any data on our servers," Manzoori said. "We currently have two terabytes of data and that will all go to the SAN. The new servers will just be there to power the CPU," a configuration Manzoori expects will result in more responsive systems for customers.

Manzoori denied, however, that the move is motivated in part by system failures at the company's current facility.

"We have had no major outages," he said in response to support e-mails read by ZDNet Australia that reported "...issue[s] with regards to network congestion ..." that have caused some SmartyHost customers to experience intermittent dropouts of Web and mail services.

Another support e-mail stated "We have been experiencing a large amount of e-mail through the server which we believe someone on the server is spamming and we are currently monitoring that and hope to find the culprit and fix up this problem".

Manzoori said he is unaware of these problems but expects service to improve once all customers have been migrated to Optus' data centre, a process already under way and expected to require several weeks to complete.

Once the process is over, Manzoori then expects to mount a concerted assault on the number two hosting company position. "We have 25,000 customers already and are adding them at the rate of one every five minutes," he told ZDNet Australia. "We expect that by the middle of next year we will have 50,000 customers.

"If you look at Destra's financials, they claim to be adding 320 customers a month. We are growing much faster than that and believe we are already the second largest hosting company in Australia".

Primus had not returned ZDNet Australia's calls on the issue by late this afternoon.

With smarty host changes to optus data center customers will be forced to upgrade their account status and pay more $$$. Existing mailbox sizes are now now part of total storage capacity regardles if email storage is used or not. All of a sudden customers may find they are over their paid for in advanced(smarty host's) web hosting limit. NO fault of their own.

Email Drama Charlene Watters -- 11/05/06

I can't believe that Smartyhost provided no forward warning, no choice and have left my company in pandemonium. We have had no emails for 2 days and being a migration company it has put many families futures at risk. The support system leaves a lot to be desired, since I have received no contact from anyone and I and my fellow workers are left dangling. Is there others out there who feel the same.

Smartyhost migration problems Peter -- 11/05/06 (in reply to #120134166)

Of the 3 domains we host with smarthost, 2 of them have had no email or website for the last 2 days, not good for our business!

We've had no response apart from a please be patient reply that was posted an hour after our ticket yesterday.

Not good enough smartyhost, I hope the new servers are worth it.

email problems Martha -- 12/05/06 (in reply to #120134166)

Yes I would guess there lots of us. I have tried for days to speak to someone but have had no luck. All of our email data and folders were lost in the changover...clearly organised by a bunch of incompetents who now are hiding under a rock!

yep Anonymous -- 12/05/06 (in reply to #120134166)

Yep, I lost all my email. Couldn't connect to the mail server for 2 days, then when I could again, my mail folder was gone. They changed the name of my database, all my accounts, and reset my passwords. They gave me several hours notice, and no warning of what would happen. My website went down, but being a personal site it was no HUGE deal.

My friend had a weeks old backup transferred to the new site, and since then he'd loaded a complete new CMS, so had to start over again. His database wound up completely empty.

I've had a P1 support ticket logged for 2 days now with no response so I can get access to the email I haven't read yet.

The website and email functionality don't bother me any more - I've switched hosts!

I agree their support stinks. My site was down during migration. Then they restored an old back up so I suddently had the wrong pages showing. This week my website was down for 7 hours and there was not any support!! I phoned and left messages and still even though the site is running now, they haven't even had the courtesy to phone me back!

Smartyhost or dummyhost Anonymous -- 11/05/06

we have 11 of our 12 sites with smartyhost down.. no email contact, old indexed pages, no ftp.. they gave us no indication they were doing this. . 2 weeks to completely migrate seems like way to long.. It is only going to get worse!

definitely not dummyhost... Anonymous -- 12/05/06 (in reply to #120134184)

I, and from what I understand, every other SmartyHost customer received notification well in advance - did you check the email newsletter they send out prior to the migration? I also received my new login details a few days before the migration started in an email - I updated my account according to the instructions and haven't had any problems with my sites.

nope, dummyhost Anonymous -- 12/05/06 (in reply to #120134199)

I'm a SmartyHost customer - I didn't get a newsletter, I didn't get an emailed password - all I got is a business taken offline for two days that is STILL down, and ingnored helpdesk enquiries.

smarty Anonymous -- 15/05/06 (in reply to #120134199)

I received an email with someone elses login details as did everyone else I know who once used smarty... I have not been with them for 12 months and still got an email with login details for a domain I have never heard of before... well done smarty... NOT

sillyhost Anonymous -- 17/05/06 (in reply to #120134199)

No prior notification and a website message which made us appear to have not paid our bill (we're 2 years in advance). Many customers OS and most negotiations via web. A very frustrating 7.5 days with no contact from "smart" y host?

    smartyhost Anonymous -- 12/05/06

and now smartyhost appears to have gone down the gurgler, at great inconvenience to many.

The crappiest host Anonymous -- 12/05/06

If anyone is even considering using smartyhost, think again. Our ecommerce site was recently down for 4 days costing thousands of dollars. Their phone mailbox was full. They didn't answer the support requests.
If anyone wants a full report they are welcome to contact me at extralite@excite.com

Good that they changed Anonymous -- 16/05/06 (in reply to #120134228)

Primus are seriously a bunch o retards when it comes to managing their data centre. They have power and network redundancy, but they don't bother to test it until it stuffs up and they reealise it doesn't work!

I don't blame smartyhost for moving. It should mean increased reliability for their customers.

No changeover notification Geoffrey Worraker -- 13/05/06

I also never received a notification. My website went down, emails bounced back to my customers, I only became aware thanks to my customers trying to access my website ringing me. They began to think I was going out of business, the whole proces was completely ball's up! Their support was overloaded, and I was out in the left cold. I have now changed hosting companies! See this thread http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=520024 Many people have been affected by their incompetence.

Smartyhost Anonymous -- 14/05/06 (in reply to #120134306)

We recieved the notification emails but also other customer details. Our forum has had problems from the day they switched and our own guys fixed issues to get us on line again which turned out to be quite simple. We now have a trojan on our site which is affecting our members when they log in.

We are going to dump them too. We have always had issues with them in the two years we have been using them. They have poor comunication and often send incorrect links for renewals so we have to do this type of thing over the phone.

Im Retired Anonymous -- 16/05/06 (in reply to #120134367)

I dont work for anyone and have several sites hosted with Smartyhost . Yes I am looking at moving ALL of them to a new provider in the very near future . They obviously have issues with their rapid expansion/growth but that is not what I and many others have problems with . Admin , communication , professionalism .
These hopefully will eventually get sorted but not at MY expense.

Not So SmartyHost Andrew -- 16/05/06

I can't redirect to SmartyHost's server which means our site is still offline (which is truly unacceptable). Previously the redirection was to http://207.44.216.75/ourdomain.com. I got through to SmartyHost's customer service by phone (at long last) and was told it should now be redirected to http://218.185.20.11/ourdomain.com, however, I was then adivsed that this is not working yet. They said they'd get back to me when they sort it out. I'm not holding my breath though!

Also, during Friday of last week I logged a support ticket to ask where to publish a sub domain site to but I'm still waiting for a response.

Still Nothing... Mame du Bois -- 16/05/06

It has now been a week since my email went down and 6 days since the website went down. I still have no website, no ftp, no email and no admin (php ect) access. Not only did they not notify us but they went and changed the passwords too! I logged two priority 1 support tickets 5 days ago and have received no response. I have left two offline messages on their supposed 'Live support' chat option. To top it off I have left 3 phone messages (or was it 4), anyhow, I have not heard a solitary word from them.

My account is fully paid 6 months in advance and my email details are still the same as when I joined up. When I tried to recover my password I got an email saying that the details had been sent to my email, problem is the email address wasn't mine - it was the email address of the company that referred me (emailcash)so they have my login details. Interestingly, all the billing information seems to reach me ok. Because of the lack of support and absolutely no access to my website from any angle I have had to establish with a new hosting company nearly from scratch. I will be giving Smartyhosts no refund policy a run for its money. I would like a prorata refund on both my hosting accounts. I would have asked for a full refund but to be fair, except for being a bit slow, their service and support had been good until now.

I think commercial forces will be teaching them a lesson so no need to push it. Having said this, I don't get paid to manage this website - and it took me 11 hours to customise a new template, set up to the system, and harvest content from an old database backup which is quite tedious and then reformat is for the new site. I will still have several days of topping up the content and tweaking the system to the way I had it. I will also have to spend half a day out of town resetting email account configurations on other computers.

I would like to point out that the reason we went with Smartyhost was because of our savings, our site was a general information site only and makes no hard money in itself other than a 'promotions tool' (actually, our email access was/is more valuable and was of most concern). If you have mission critical needs or your business relies on the website then you need to pay the bit extra for more reliable hosting. Most importantly of all - BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!

I would never wish bad on someones business (we all make mistakes) and we did actually save over $200 for changing hosters 6 months ago but I fear this could have majorly damaged Smartys reputation. I will not host with them anytime soon. But in all fairness, my new multidomain hosting package was on the cards for us anyway.

Goodluck Mr Manzoori, I think your going to need it.

Well they've lost my business Anonymous -- 19/05/06

Yes, me too. Lost a business site on a subdomain completely and lost a forum with all members and postings for a year. Zero assistance and support apart from one reply to a ticket which was completely unrelated to my problems
Cut my losses and transferred all three hosting accounts to a new company.

Smartyhost gone catatonic? Dr Jennifer .M. Robinson -- 21/05/06

My experience as a Smartyhost customer has been much worse than that described in your article. My website disappeared. My email disappeared. My login ceased to work so I can no longer maintain my website. My tickets logged on the support system haven't been read for 11 days. I've called the support line daily and always get cut off before talking with anyone. After hours of trying Live Chat, the closest I've gotten to service is 7th in the que. Recently the Live Chat seems to be turned off. I've emailed, and emailed, and emailed. My website reappeared today, but I still don't get email, etc. My contact details have not changed and I did not receive any prior notification. I am paid up until 2008.

Yesterday I got so frustrated I filed a complaint at
    http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/717452/fromItemId/716345

I would recommend that anyone else getting the same satisfaction that I've been getting do the same.

We've now been down for 10 bloody days without any answer to our phone calls or emails directly to Anoosh.

We've probably lost hundreds of dollars of business if not in the thousands. Utterly pissed off now.

Just paid $300 or so to renew and now want to get out of it. They were first-class before but my patience is now at an end.

smartyhost emails Chris Broers -- 26/05/06

I've had no email access to my business acount or replys from the online help system (or phone calls) for 9 days. My business relies on email to recieve work and communicate with my clients. My business reputation is soured and my proffessionalism severely damaged.
A reply to my technical problems would have been appreciated. Access within 2-3 days even better!!

When can i gain access to my business email account? - I have no idea - but I can assure you - smartyhost won't be making the apologies to my clients.

I'll be the one doing the apologizing - not something I look forward too.

Smartyhost stuffs up Email again. Anonymous -- 21/07/06 (in reply to #120138263)

Took 4 days to fix, they blamed it on Spam filtering (which I had requested not take place on my accounts).
    Are they paying you stephanie?

DON'T THINK ABOUT IT!! Anonymous -- 08/08/08 (in reply to #120138263)

Two years later & they are getting worse. Technical support is non existent, server changes are made without adequate consideration. Problems are blamed on shared servers & upsell to Virtual server is suggested to solve all problems:
My favorite response from technical support & the best reason note to use them unless you are not serious about uptime:
"As you may appreciate, this means that the servers performance is impacted by all of the hosting accounts on it and, at peak usage times, when the server will be receiving 1000s of hits [relative to it's hosting accounts] as well as the constant stream of email traffic [coming to and from the server] and this may mean that temporary / momentary server resource issues may cause services to run slower for a brief period"
