SkyNetGlobal signs broadband deal for home automation

SkyNetGlobal has signed an agreement with Telstra Wholesale to provide bandwidth for its W Home network, which the company sees as a stepping stone to smart houses.

Telstra Wholesale will provide Layer 1 DSL, and SkyNetGlobal plans to offer the broadband service wirelessly through W Home, with add-ons including home automation software. This will allow consumers to use their computer to control devices such as lights, kitchen appliances, audio visual systems and security systems, assuming these devices are compatible with the W Home network.

These devices are already available through retail outlets such as Harvey Norman and Dick Smith, and SkyNetGlobal plans to launch a W Home branded 'self install' Smart Broadband Kit early next year, which will include a wireless DSL router and access to the home automation software portal.

Home automation software, which allows you to control multiple devices from a single point, is seen as the stepping stone to 'Smart House' technology, which will see devices predict what the user wants them to do.
